In the northeast of Italy, in the province of Padua there is the city of Este surrounded by charming hills. The Este village has already been inhabited since the Neolithic times. It got its name after the river Adige that originally flowed through the city in the past. Este is crossed by picturesque structures. In the Middle Ages the city was one of the most important centres in the area. A noble family named after the city ruled over the city until 1239 and brought wealth and prestige to it. After the family left the city, the Carraresi family ruled the city. At that time the beautiful castle of Este was also built. Between 1338 and 1339 Ubertino built Carrara. Nowadays the city park is located by the 1,000 meter city wall that has 12 towers. Besides the castle, Este also offers a great number of remarkable churches. The church of Madonna delle Grazie has got a large Byzantine Madonna, a miracle statue that is a gift from the Dominicans. Madonna delle Grazie is the most important and the most famous church in the city. Who wants to enjoy pure nature can visit the Colli Euganei – the best regional park.
