Venice Biennale 2010

Munich-based firm oversees the German pavilion at the Venice Biennale
The German architectural firm Walverwandtschaften, based in Munich, has been commissioned to design the German pavilion at this year’s Venice Biennale. The Munich firm has chosen the motto “People meet in Architecture.” The question at its heart is whether architecture can offer new insights into the values and lifestyles of people today. This year’s Architecture Biennale is directed by Kazuyo Sejima of Japan. The 2010 Venice Biennale will therefore mark a first: Sejima is the first woman to head the Biennale.
The latest innovations in architecture will be presented at the 2010 Biennale. Modern forms and functions are the focus of the event. The German participants are supported in their involvement in the 2010 Biennale by the Federal Ministry of Transport, Building and Urban Development (BMVBS). The ministry is represented in Venice by the Federal Institute for Research on Building, Urban Affairs and Spatial Development (BBSR). The institute supports the German contribution to the 2010 Venice Architecture Biennale with funding and assistance on organizational matters.
The 2010 Biennale brings together Europe’s leading architects and urban planners. This year, too, the event aims to offer a representative cross-section of current trends in architecture. The award-winning projects will be presented to the public after the prizes are announced. This year, the focus is likely to be increasingly on architectural measures for energy-efficient construction.
