A New Mode of Transport in Venice

Venice’s gondolas have gained some competition: The “People Mover” was unveiled in Venice on Monday of last week. It is a new mode of transport in Venice.

The elevated railway, called the “People Mover,” connects the Isola del Tronchetto car terminal with the cruise ship dock and Piazzale Roma, near Santa Lucia railway station. The elevated railway takes just under three minutes to travel from the island of Tronchetto to Piazzale Roma.

The People Mover is ceremonially inaugurated by the mayor of Venice

The mayor of Venice, Giorgio Orsini, officially opened the “People Mover” in a formal ceremony. Venice has high hopes for the roughly 900-meter-long railway, which connects the artificially constructed Isola del Tronchetto with Piazzale Roma in Venice. The modern mode of transport, the elevated “People Mover” railway, has now been officially in operation for a week and is intended to provide a useful and, above all, time-saving alternative for transporting people within the city limits of Venice. In addition to its short travel time of just under three minutes, the railway can carry up to 3,000 passengers per hour in four carriages. The construction costs for the “People Mover” amounted to around 18 million euros. If it proves successful, Venice’s city officials do not rule out gradually expanding the “People Mover” rail service over the coming years. The new mode of transport is also certainly an asset and a bargaining chip in the lagoon city’s bid to host the 2020 Olympic Games (as we reported), strengthening its ambitions to become the host city for the 2020 Olympic Games.
