The King of Venice

The „King of Venice“ is back: Dutch surfer Duncan Zuur, who became famous around the world in 2008 for his crazy surfing ride across Venice’s flooded St. Mark’s Square, has now surfed through the canals and under the bridges of his hometown, Amsterdam, together with fellow Dutchwoman Denise de Haan, a multiple world and European champion.

This week, Duncan Zuur, the „King of Venice,“ surfed through the waters of Amsterdam’s canals in his famously spectacular style, riding a wakeboard pulled by a jet ski, with 23-year-old Denise de Haan close behind.

The two exceptional riders covered around four kilometers along the Amstel and Prinsengracht, making impressive circuits. They passed beneath bridges 19 times. The two jet skis towing the wakeboarders „at speed“ had 250 horsepower to get them moving. After the stunt, Zuur told the press: „In Venice I had ten seconds of adrenaline; in Amsterdam, it was ten minutes.“

As in Venice, the two surfers missed the disembarkation point and had to flee through the streets of Amsterdam, soaking wet and carrying their wakeboards, with the police after them—because the stunt was not entirely legal: Such stunts require authorization, since they can pose a danger to, and be endangered by, boat traffic. For Zuur, however, the highlight of his career so far remains the seven turns he made across St. Mark’s Square in December 2008. „The images were seen all over the world, in every magazine and newspaper, and on television everywhere!“ the charismatic Dutchman told the press.
