High Water in Venice

Flooding in the lagoon city of Venice: At the beginning of this week, autumn storms and heavy rain in the „City of Love“ in Veneto meant that the high water was once again slowly but surely making itself felt. On Monday, the water level in Venice was reported at 102 centimetres above the normal level.

Is the water level rising in the lagoon city of Venice?

The water level in Venice thus rose to a point that put the authorities on alert. Around 7 percent of the northern Italian vacation city was already under water. If the high water rises to 110 centimetres in the near future, some areas of the city’s historic centre may no longer be accessible without getting your feet wet, according to local Venetian experience. Experts estimate that this could happen as early as the beginning of next month. Various Italian media outlets reported this in recent days. If water levels reach this point in the coming weeks, Venice will once again experience “Acqua alta,” as the Venetians call the high water.

Venice is prepared for “Acqua alta”: The city is already taking preventive measures

The lagoon city of Venice, built on stilts, has been defying the power of water ever since it was founded and can draw on centuries of experience in this area. The authorities are therefore prepared and are dutifully getting ready for possible high water. For this reason, vacationers need not worry that a stay in Venice in the coming days and weeks will literally be “washed out”: Venice’s gondolas will be even more valuable to the city in the days ahead than they already are.Venice
