MS Delphin detained in Venice

The cruise ship MS Delphin and its crew are waiting for a decision in the port of Venice. The ship has been detained there as security after its German operating company filed for insolvency. The crew of the MS Delphin is now waiting aboard the ship in Venice for their outstanding wages to be paid and for news about what will happen to the cruise ship.

The MS Delphin was seized as security by a Greek charter company and has been in the port of Venice since October 16, 2010. The crew has been waiting for a solution ever since. Earlier, in September of that year, the MS Delphin was detained in Nice, France, but was able to continue its voyage after a week and a half.

After Delphin Group Hamburg and Delphin Cruises GmbH filed for insolvency on October 12, 2010, all upcoming cruises of the MS Delphin under their “Hansa Kreuzfahrten” brand were canceled at very short notice as an immediate measure.

The crew of the MS Delphin thus ended the luxury liner’s last cruise for the time being in mid-October 2010 in the port of Venice, where all passengers disembarked. Captain Gaber and the 220 crew members remained aboard the MS Delphin and have been waiting ever since for their outstanding wages to be paid. The question of how the crew members will get home also needs to be resolved. Some crew members are from Ukraine and still do not know how they will return home. Payment of their wages is said to be guaranteed, although the date of payment is still uncertain. At present, however, it remains unclear who will cover the crew members’ travel costs to get home.
