Soon, the “City of Love” will once again become the “City of Masks”: next year, Carnival in Venice will be celebrated from 26 February to 8 March 2011. Alongside the world-famous masks, Venice will once again host many fascinating events in 2011, including formal ceremonies and celebrations in Piazza San Marco. The “Festa delle Marie”, featuring tournaments and jousting, with musicians and street performers showcasing their talents in medieval costumes, is also expected to attract visitors from near and far in 2011.
Flight of the Angel, music, masks and costumes: Carnival in Venice 2011
The “Flight of the Angel” is one of the best-known and most popular features of the Venetian Carnival: Every year, during the “Volo dell'angelo” (also known as the “Volo della colombina”), or Flight of the Angel (or Dove), a prominent Italian figure “flies” down from the Campanile di Giotto to the square. The “Danza delle ore” puts music at the heart of Venice Carnival once again in 2011: live concerts, carnival parades in traditional Venetian costumes, and a competition to select the most beautiful masks of the season are among the highlights of Carnival in Venice.
