Belluno: History, Museums and Nevegal
Accommodation in Belluno
Belluno reveals itself through buildings from several centuries; its museums add insights into mountain life and archaeological finds. The landscape, sports and travel options can also be part of your trip planning. When looking for accommodation, it helps to decide first what you want to focus on. If you would also like to compare other destinations, discover Alleghe, Arabba, Borca Di Cadore, Falcade, San Vito Di Cadore, Valle Di Cadore, Zoldo Alto and Masarè.
Belluno’s Buildings Through the Centuries
Porta Dojona is part of a fortified complex at the northeastern corner of the old city walls. Vecello da Cusighe built its inner arch in 1289 for the bishop and count Adalgerio da Villalta. The Torrione is the only surviving section of the old city walls. Construction began in 1481 under the Venetian rector Perazzo Malipiero; Luca Foscarini completed it in 1489. The two structures offer different reference points in the city’s history: the 13th-century archway and the late-medieval Torrione.
The Palazzo dei Rettori also dates from the 15th century. The Palazzo Fulcis represents a later period: in 1776, architect Valentino Alpago-Novello gave it its present form by combining three previously separate buildings. The palazzo preserves important stucco decorations from the 17th and 18th centuries. Its construction history and decorative features thus point to different periods.
The Cattedrale di Santa Maria Assunta dates from the 16th century. The Teatro Comunale was built in the neoclassical style to a design by Giuseppe Segusini between 1833 and 1835. The theater features nine stone and bronze busts depicting Venetian rectors from the 16th and 17th centuries. Visitors interested in architecture can see a range of periods and styles reflected in these specific buildings.
Museums and the History of the Mountain Area
The Museo Etnografico del Parco presents permanent and temporary exhibitions about life in the mountains. The Museo Civico houses archaeological finds from Belluno’s early history and from the Roman Empire. The two museums have different focuses: one is dedicated to mountain life, while the other showcases archaeological collections relating to Belluno and the Roman Empire.
Nevegal: Landscape and Sports
Nevegal reaches an elevation of 1,700 meters and features coniferous forests and flower-filled meadows. In addition to this landscape, Nevegal offers opportunities for a wide range of summer and winter sports. The winter sports mentioned include downhill skiing and cross-country skiing; there is also a night-skiing slope. Check the night-skiing slope’s current operating status before your trip.
The Gran Tour delle Dolomiti Bellunesi offers another way to plan an active trip around the region: this bikepacking loop starts and ends in Belluno. Its format differs from the sports activities available on Nevegal. No details about the tour’s duration or difficulty are available here, so no such figures are assumed for planning purposes.

Regional Cuisine
Piave DOP is one of the traditional cheeses of the Belluno area. Regional cheeses can be sampled directly at mountain farms and local cheese dairies. Check in advance whether the establishment you plan to visit is open to visitors for tastings. This lets you include regional cuisine in your plans without conflating it with the historical or sporting themes of your stay.
