Capriva del Friuli combines a seven-kilometre circular trail with historic buildings and a hilly landscape shaped by vineyards. Several interests can guide your choice of destination: local history can be traced through churches and castle architecture, while parks, vines and olive trees shape the landscape. If you are looking for accommodation, these highlights can help you plan your days. The places mentioned differ in scale and character—from the fortified circular route to the expansive estate.

Circular Trail and Local History

The “Ator par Capriva” route is a seven-kilometre circular trail along paved roads. It passes through the historic centre and surrounding green spaces. On Piazza Vittoria, it passes the parish church of the Most Holy Name of Mary; Via Verdi leads to the Church of the Santissima Trinità, popularly also known as San Giuseppe. The route’s length and circular shape give it a clearly defined scope, while the two churches are named stops for those interested in local history.

The Centa is also part of Capriva’s history. It is a circular defensive complex, first mentioned in 1521, with earlier origins. The year therefore marks its first recorded mention, not the origin of the complex. The Church of the Santissima Trinità, also known as San Giuseppe, was built between 1570 and 1575. In this case, the dates refer to a period of construction—two different historical dates that should not be conflated.

Castle, Architecture and Landscape

The Castello di Spessa acquired its present architectural form in the early 20th century, based on a design by Trieste architect Ruggero Berlam in the Neo-Gothic style. Neo-Gothic architecture revived Gothic forms at a later date. Another specific date in the castle’s history is 1773: Giacomo Casanova was a guest at the Castello di Spessa that year. There is also an area along the road to the castle where the remains of a Roman kiln were found.

The park of the Castello di Spessa completely surrounds the castle. Vineyards and the adjoining 18-hole golf course, in turn, surround the park. At the Golf & Country Club Castello di Spessa, the 18-hole course winds through gentle hills with vineyards and olive trees. This highlights two different landscapes: the park framing the castle and the hilly course with vines and olive trees. The activity details are also distinct: “Ator par Capriva” is described as a seven-kilometre circular trail, while the golf course has 18 holes.

At the Villa Russiz complex, a chestnut avenue and a cedar grove lead into a park with imposing trees and a wide variety of flowers. The 93-hectare estate includes a villa-castle, a wine cellar, a boarding school, a chapel, a former silk mill, stables and a mausoleum. The chestnut avenue, cedar grove and park vegetation give the landscape a different emphasis from the vineyards and olive trees at the Castello di Spessa.

Wine Country and Friulian Cuisine

In the Collio goriziano near Capriva del Friuli, dozens of hectares of vineyards stretch in geometrically arranged rows across gentle hills. This landscape offers another perspective on the area: alongside individual buildings and parks, continuous rows of vines and gentle ridgelines shape the scene. Those weighing culture against landscape when planning a trip will find different points of interest here, without these necessarily amounting to the same kind of excursion.

Casa Vidussi offers traditional Friulian dishes with modern interpretations, as well as tasting experiences. The offerings may change over time. Along with the wine country, the cuisine adds a culinary dimension to the historical and landscape highlights.
