Discover Baone: Hills, Trails and History
Accommodation in Baone
Baone is a suitable destination for you if you would like to discover a landscape featuring historical landmarks, distinctive rocks, regional flora and local traditions. Baone combines peaceful walks in the hills with themed trails, medieval traces and an annual event centered around peas. This allows nature, history and local character to be brought together without any single attraction defining the entire stay.
Hilly Landscape and Distinctive Nature
The hills around Baone offer peaceful, health-promoting walks in a varied setting at any time of year. The landscape includes diverse landforms and rocks, beautiful flora and occasional encounters with local wildlife. Sentiero del Monte Cecilia No. 8 passes through a limestone meadow where yellow-flowering broom and the rare Ruta patavina can be found. This plant species is endemic to northeastern Italy and the Balkan Peninsula.
The Parco delle Ginestre also showcases a characteristic section of the Euganean Hills. There you will find a Percorso Vita with exercise equipment and benches. The same park also offers the opportunity to observe the typical landscapes of the Euganean Hills. Another notable geological feature can be found on Monte Cecilia: latite occurs there, an extrusive rock composed mainly of feldspars.
One of the striking natural features is the Carega del Diavolo. This is a distinctive rock formation resembling an imposing throne, located near the ruins of the Santa Margherita monastery. Such individual landscape features provide a specific point of reference during walks, while the hills also offer space for quieter exploration.
Historical Trails and Landmarks
A branch trail from Sentiero del Monte Cecilia leads to the ruins of the medieval castle of the da Baone family. Another link between history and landscape is the Via degli Eremi, Ruderi e Castelli. This themed trail connects some of the park's most significant historical landmarks. The Via degli Eremi, Ruderi e Castelli is recommended for visits year-round, making it a distinct focus for exploring Baone's historical surroundings.
Several named sites point to different historical periods. A medieval predecessor of Villa Ca’ Barbaro, known as Casa merlata dei Macaruffi, has been documented since at least 1373. Villa Beatrice d'Este stands on Monte Gemola; Saint Beatrice I d'Este lived there from 1221 to 1226. The Chiesetta della Madonna delle Ave developed from an earlier defensive structure into a Marian shrine following a reported miracle, attracting pilgrims for centuries.
Peas and the Local Event Calendar
Baone is known for the production and trade of peas. This also explains the importance of the Festa dei Bisi to the town. It was founded in 1999 on the initiative of the Pro Loco of Baone, with the support of the Municipality of Baone, and within a few years became the municipality's most important event. The Festa dei Bisi is held in Baone every year at the end of May. The event thus complements the historical and landscape themes with a clear local connection.
