Walking along the medieval city walls

The defining experience in Cittadella is the Camminamento di Ronda: the medieval ramparts are fully walkable, elliptical in layout, and offer panoramic views at a height of 15 meters. This means the city walls can be experienced not only from the outside, but also as a circular walk in their own right. The elliptical city walls have a circumference of 1,461 meters and give the visit a clearly recognizable historical structure.

The city walls of Cittadella are open daily from 9 a.m. The only closing day is Christmas Day. Approximately 45 minutes are allotted for the complete walk. This approximate duration describes the walk as a manageable, self-contained visitor experience that can easily be incorporated into a day with additional cultural attractions.

Traveling by train and access to the site

If you arrive by train, after about 500 meters along Viale della Stazione you will reach the southern entrance to the city walls, Porta Padova. This access point connects the train station with a specific entrance to the historic site. When choosing the area for your accommodation, this makes it possible to understand the orientation between the train station, Viale della Stazione, and Porta Padova without assuming any additional distances or routes.

Torre di Malta and archaeological history

An important cultural site within the city walls is the Torre di Malta. Ezzelino III da Romano built the tower in 1251 as a prison for his enemies. Today, the Torre di Malta houses the Civic Archaeological Museum. The collection comprises archaeological finds from Cittadella and the surrounding area and spans the period from the Bronze Age to the Renaissance. The tower thus combines a specifically documented historical purpose with an exhibition covering several periods of the region’s past.

Art at the Museo del Duomo

The Museo del Duomo complements the walk along the city walls with sacred art. There you can see Jacopo Bassano’s painting “Cena in Emmaus” from 1537. The museum also displays “Compianto sul Cristo morto,” a work attributed to Andrea da Murano from the late 15th century. The attribution to Andrea da Murano explicitly remains part of the work’s classification. Together with the Civic Archaeological Museum, this creates a visitor profile that combines architectural history, archaeology, and art at different sites.

Exhibitions and recurring events

At the Palazzo Pretorio, the Fondazione Pretorio Onlus organizes exhibitions of national importance. Those who wish to take changing presentations into account in addition to the cultural sites described as permanent attractions will find another distinct focus here. The Fiera Franca di Cittadella is also listed as a recurring event. It takes place annually from Saturday to Monday on the fourth weekend of October.

For Cittadella, the 14th edition of FORMAGGIO IN VILLA was scheduled from Friday, April 17, to Sunday, April 19, 2026, as a visitor event related to cheese. This date is therefore one of the documented event references for the place and is to be classified as an event in April 2026.

More places to choose from
