Padua brings together important milestones in university history with religious sites, art and archaeological collections. A botanical garden and a covered market are also among the city’s many facets. When planning a cultural stay, it helps to consider these themes separately: some places tell stories of science and the university, while others reflect religious devotion, art or historical urban life.

University, Art and Religious History

The first permanent anatomical theater was built in 1594 in the Palazzo del Bo. In 1678, the world’s first woman earned a university degree there. These dates mark distinct chapters in the history of the university: the theater relates to the development of anatomical teaching, while the degree relates to the history of access to higher education. Those wishing to explore Padua through its educational and cultural history will find two specific historical reference points here.

The Chapel of Saint Anthony is part of the city’s religious history: it contains the tomb of Saint Anthony. The so-called “Ultimo Cammino” offers another connection to his story. It follows the route Sant’Antonio took in June 1231 from the Santuari Antoniani di Camposampiero to the Basilica del Santo in Padua. The historical route passes through the Santuario Antoniano dell’Arcella and can be retraced.

Padua’s artistic heritage is also represented across several sites. Padova Urbs Picta has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since the summer of 2021. The Eremitani museum complex includes the Cappella degli Scrovegni and an archaeological museum. Its finds range from the ancient Venetic and Roman periods to the Egyptian era. This combination of art and archaeology offers a different way to explore the city from its university history, bringing artistic works and artifacts from different periods together.

Museums and Historic Buildings

MUSME is housed in a 15th-century palazzo that was home to the city’s first hospital. The building thus connects a specific site in the city’s history with the story of its medical institutions. At La Specola, by contrast, a tower takes center stage: it is the oldest part of the site and opened as an astronomical museum for the city in 1994. The two institutions offer different perspectives—one through its former hospital site, the other through its tower and its use as an astronomical museum.

The Palazzo della Ragione, whose construction dates to 1218, is one of Padua’s landmarks. On its ground floor is the Sotto Salone, a covered market with two corridors. It is home to historic shops and food businesses. The palazzo can therefore be viewed both as a striking city landmark and through the market on its ground floor; architectural history and market life share the same place, but they offer different perspectives for visitors.

Botanical Themes and Practical Guidance

The Giardino della biodiversità has four greenhouses with around 1,300 plant species. The plants come from tropical, subhumid, temperate and arid habitats. These four categories and the approximate number of species help convey the breadth of the collection. This should be distinguished from the historical concept of the Orto Botanico as a “Horto Medicinale”: it was intended for the study and testing of plants with natural therapeutic effects.

When traveling between museums, it is important to consider the traffic restrictions: most museums on Padua’s museum route are within the limited traffic zone (ZTL). Visitors are therefore advised to reach them by bus, tram or taxi. This guidance applies to the museums on the route and should not be generalized to every place in the city. If you would like to discover more destinations in addition to Padua, you can also find Pelosa, Albignasego, Sant'angelo Di Piove Di Sacco, Pernumia and Ospedaletto Euganeo.
