In Erto, local history and trails through the landscape come together in a distinctive way. The historic Passion play, memorial sites relating to the Vajont disaster and the rock formations of Laste di San Daniele each offer a different focus. When planning your trip, it is therefore worth first considering whether you are mainly interested in history, walking, or combining the two.

Local history and remembrance of the Vajont disaster

The Centro Visite di Erto e Casso is located in Erto, in the former primary school building. The historic Passion play is also part of the town’s cultural character: for many centuries, it has been associated with a Good Friday performance throughout the town. Those interested in this tradition will encounter a story that involves Erto as a whole.

Another way to explore the past leads to the former workers’ village. The Trui de la Moliesa leads to the still-visible remains of the settlement; the easy trail begins close to the Vajont Dam. At the dam in Erto e Casso, there is also a short, 50-minute guided tour along the crest. If you would like to learn more about the history of the Vajont disaster as a whole, excursions to memorial sites are also possible. These different options each offer a distinct perspective: a trail to visible settlement remains, a guided tour of the dam, or a visit to other places of remembrance.

Rock formations and trails from Erto

Laste di San Daniele stands out for its rock formations, which resemble enormous books stacked on top of one another. From there, you can enjoy an impressive view of Monte Toc, its landslide scar and the landslide below, which is associated with the Vajont disaster. A visit thus takes in both the landscape’s unusual forms and the visible traces of the disaster.

Erto is a starting point for scenic nature trails, including routes into Val Zemola. From Erto, you can reach Laste di San Daniele via old access paths leading to the forests, pastures and mountain meadows of Tamers, as well as the Monte Borgà massif. If you enjoy walking, you can consider Erto as a starting point for trails offering a variety of landscapes.

Cava Buscada: walking trail or forest road

Cava Buscada also combines a trail through the landscape with an insight into the quarry’s history. The archaeological and industrial trail leads to the former quarry workers’ accommodation. Many historically interesting tools and materials are still preserved there. From Erto, Cava Buscada can be reached on foot via CAI Trail 381. Another described option is a forest road from “Stei de Conte” towards Casera Mela, continuing to Cava Buscada. This route is about 4.5 km long and can also be cycled. When choosing, the main points to consider are the access route and your interest in industrial history.

This way, your choice of where to stay can reflect your travel interests without combining different trails and places to visit into a single route.
