Ghirano: Local History and Cycling

Ghirano brings together church history, the Villa Floridi estate and a cycling route towards Pordenone. These topics offer different ways to explore the town: the churches tell of changes in parish functions and later restoration work, Villa Floridi brings together the history of its architecture and uses, and the cycling route appeals to travellers who would like to include a ride in their plans. When choosing where to stay, consider which of these interests matters most for your trip.

Churches Through Historical Change

The original parish church, dedicated to Saints Peter and Paul, stood by the cemetery. In 1419, it was declared unfit for use. That same year, the Church of San Francesco in the town effectively became the parish church; however, its parish function was not officially transferred to it until 1770. The actual function and formal transfer were therefore separated in time: the change began in 1419, and the official designation followed considerably later.

Another historical landmark is the parish church of San Pietro e San Paolo in Ghirano. Floods damaged it in 1965 and 1966, so it was restored in 1968. Taken together, these dates show a sequence from the change in parish function and its official transfer to the damage and restoration in the 20th century. These were distinct events that complement one another in the town’s history.

Villa Floridi: Architecture and Phases of Use

In the 17th century, a branch of the Floridi family built its residence in Ghirano: a three-storey stately palazzo with a large park, barchesse and agricultural buildings. Villa Floridi is described as the historic estate of the Counts Floridi. These features make clear that the estate’s history encompasses not only the palazzo, but also the park and associated buildings.

Its time as a residence was followed by another use: Villa Floridi later became the headquarters of the Latteria sociale di Ghirano. On 21 June 2024, it was inaugurated as the headquarters of the Centro Culturale Conti di Prata APS. The estate’s changing role can thus be traced through several stages: after its construction in the 17th century came its use by the dairy, followed by its inauguration as the cultural association’s headquarters in 2024. For those interested in cultural history, the site brings together architectural history and a succession of different uses.

A Name with Early Historical Connections

The name Ghirano also has its own historical interpretation. It is traced back to an ancient fortified place known as a “girone”. This place was never actually identified and was dated to the 10th century. Thus, alongside the dated events in the churches’ history, there is an account of the name’s origin whose point of reference has not been specifically identified. This interpretation reaches further back in time than the church events mentioned, but remains tied to the traditional attribution to the unidentified place.

Cycling Towards Pordenone

From Ghirano, the PN2027 R073 cycling route runs towards Pordenone near the banks of the Meduna. The route is not signposted. For your trip planning, its direction, its proximity to the river and the lack of signs are the specific features of this ride. If cycling is to be a focus of your stay, Ghirano can also be considered from this perspective; the route heads from here towards Pordenone and connects the ride with the surroundings of the Meduna.

A Connection at Municipality Level

At the level of the municipality to which Ghirano belongs, another religious motif comes into view. At the foot of the Grande Quercia stands a small wayside shrine depicting the Madonna and Child; it is decorated with roses. This municipal connection complements Ghirano’s church history with another sacred motif, without conflating the distinct local and municipal connections.
