Culture and history in Pinzano al Tagliamento

The Mulino di Borgo Ampiano is a fully restored 14th-century mill. It includes a large outdoor park for educational and cultural activities. The remains of the Castello di Pinzano provide a historical contrast: among the woods, fragments of walls and a few ruins of the numerous buildings within the former fortifications have been preserved.

The Chiesa di San Martino Vescovo also offers a tangible connection to art history. It dates from the 15th century and was modernized in the 18th century. Inside, it preserves frescoes by Giovanni Antonio De' Sacchis, known as Il Pordenone, from 1525 and 1527, as well as the altarpiece Sant'Antonio in Gloria by Giovanni Antonio Guardi. In Valeriano, the Chiesa di Santo Stefano Protomartire also houses a fresco triptych by Il Pordenone, dated and signed 1506. The Oratorio di Santa Maria dei Battuti preserves there the work Natività, executed as a fresco by Giovanni Antonio de’ Sacchis in 1527.

The old Via d'Allemagna is also part of the history of the landscape. Pinzano and Valeriano were important stops along this historic route. Those interested in the events of the First World War can follow the Itinerario del Ponte di Pinzano e batteria del Col Colàt, a panoramic route to corresponding remains near the Tagliamento. The Col Colàt battery preserves gun emplacements for 149-mm guns in barbette, an underground powder magazine, ammunition chambers with a 6.5-metre-long lift, casemates and a stone entrance. The installations date from 1909–1910.

Water, viewpoints and paths

The Ponte sul Tagliamento in Pinzano al Tagliamento was built between 1967 and 1969. It was constructed after the former three-arch bridge was severely damaged by the flood of November 1966. The Stretta di Pinzano geotope is easily accessible and visible from the Ponte di Pinzano.

Several water destinations offer different experiences. Sflunc SamontĂ n is a waterfall with a small lake. The three waterfalls known as Cascate Butines flow over vertical rock slabs. A road running parallel to the stream leads to a higher viewpoint overlooking the Cascate Butines. The Pontaiba stream near the waterfalls is suitable for canyoning.

For a cycling trip, the FVG6 Ciclovia del Tagliamento follows a clearly described route: as far as Pinzano al Tagliamento it runs through hilly terrain, then continues on level ground to the Tagliamento’s mouth at Lignano Sabbiadoro, with some gentle climbs and descents. The Cammino di San Cristoforo reaches Pinzano; there, the castle ruins rise from the summit of the hill above the Tagliamento. When planning your trip, you can therefore choose between a cycling route, a cultural and historical exploration, a waterscape and a section of the pilgrimage route, without limiting the journey to just one attraction.
