Sacile
Accommodation in Sacile
Sacile combines a historic town centre with the Livenza River and clearly defined transport options. When choosing your accommodation, the location of the railway station, proximity to the historic centre and access via the A28 are particularly useful points of reference. At the same time, the town offers an unusual combination of architectural history, waterscapes and individual opportunities to experience the Livenza actively or as part of a guided excursion.
Getting to and finding your way around Sacile
Sacile railway station is located on the Venice–Udine railway line. It is also a junction on the Sacile–Gemona line, which follows the route at the foot of the Prealps. From the station, you can reach the historic centre in approximately 15 minutes on foot.
By car, Sacile can be reached via the A28 motorway between Portogruaro and Conegliano. The Sacile Est and Sacile Ovest exits are available for this purpose. Those looking for accommodation can therefore first consider Sacile according to their preferred means of arrival and then assess the location in relation to the railway station and historic centre.
Historic Centre on the Livenza
Sacile’s historic centre developed in close relationship with the Livenza River. The river carries water all year round and, with its scenically attractive banks, shapes the surrounding landscape. The town’s history is also connected with the water: the former landing place for merchant ships, known as “portus Sacili”, corresponds to today’s square.
In the area of the Mura e Torrioni, a footpath runs along the Livenza. A footbridge passes the tower and continues to Pra’ Castelvecchio Park. This makes it possible to combine a walk along the river with the fortification elements of this part of the town and another destination along the way, without reducing the different locations to a single attraction.
Duomo, Palaces and Religious Buildings
The present-day Duomo di San Nicolò was built between 1474 and 1496 under the direction of Beltrame and Vittorino da Como. Inside, the cathedral has three naves separated by Gothic arcades on columns. Palazzo Ragazzoni is a 16th-century palace and symbolically represents Sacile’s connection with the Republic of Venice.
Another notable stop is the Chiesetta della Pietà. It was consecrated at the beginning of 1616 and has an entrance porch with a double loggia that projects directly over the waters of the Livenza. Those who explore Sacile through its architecture will therefore find buildings from different periods, with each one’s relationship to the town and the river clearly identified.
River Experiences, Guided Tours and Art
The Livenza can be explored by kayak. Depending on the section chosen, appropriate technical skills are required. There is also a guided river excursion in Sacile: small boats are operated by experienced staff and travel along the Livenza, beneath stone bridges and past the façades of 16th-century palaces. Kayaking and the guided boat trip therefore differ above all in the documented form of participation.
A central section of the Livenza is designated as a “No-Kill” area. Fishing there is permitted exclusively with artificial lures. A guided tour of Sacile is offered in Italian and English. The Galleria d’Arte Moderna Pino Casarini is also significant to the town’s art history. Its collection comprises 68 paintings, 150 set-design sketches for the Arena di Verona, as well as 800 drawings and preparatory studies. The gallery is temporarily closed due to extensive renovation work on the building.
Further Natural Features
The “smorta” di Cavolano is also regarded as a natural heritage site of great value. It complements the Livenza and the historic buildings with an independent landscape aspect, without implying any particular route or accessibility.
