Rovigo offers a variety of travel experiences: the city of Rovigo is shaped by art and architectural history, while the province is associated with river landscapes and wetlands.

The City of Rovigo: Architecture and Collections

A striking landmark is the Tempio della Beata Vergine del Soccorso, known as La Rotonda. Its octagonal floor plan makes the church a symbol of Rovigo. It was designed by Francesco Zamberlan, and its foundation stone was laid on 13 October 1594. The 57-metre-high bell tower was built by Baldassarre Longhena in 1773. The historic monumental complex, including the Torre Donà, also has a long history: in 920, permission was granted to build a castle to protect against barbarian incursions. The Torre Donà is about 60 metres tall and is one of Italy’s notable early medieval towers.

At Palazzo Roverella, architectural history and art come together. Construction began in 1474 on the orders of Cardinal Bartolomeo Roverella; tradition attributes it to craftsmen from Ferrara associated with the architect Biagio Rossetti. Today, the palace houses the Pinacoteca collection as well as temporary art and photography exhibitions. The Pinacoteca of the Accademia dei Concordi contains more than 400 works. It also includes an archaeological section featuring the Camillo Silvestri collection and the Egyptian collection of Giuseppe Valsè Pantellini. The Accademia’s library makes more than 300,000 documents available to the public.

Other buildings showcase different periods and styles. Palazzo Roncale was built between 1550 and 1562 to a design by the Veronese architect Michele Sanmicheli; since 2016, it has hosted temporary exhibitions on the area’s artistic and cultural heritage. Palazzo Venezze was designed in 1715 by Agostino Ghirotti on behalf of Count Stefano Venezze. The San Bartolomeo complex dates back to the 13th century and reached its peak after the Olivetan monastery was expanded in the 16th and 17th centuries. For music and theatre, the historic Teatro Sociale offers opera, drama, dance, symphonic music, chamber music and jazz seasons.

Walks and Excursions

For a walk or bike ride through the city, the Percorso delle Mura Antiche offers a useful comparison: the circular route takes about 60 minutes on foot and about 25 minutes by bike. Tra Piazze e Palazzi is an urban walk through the historic centre. Those interested in the history of the Olivetans can take I luoghi degli Olivetani, a 25-kilometre circular route. It follows a cycle path for part of the way, then paved roads with some traffic, as well as unpaved paths.

The Bike & Boat route La Via dell’Archeologia leads from the former Olivetan monastery of San Bartolomeo to a landing stage, then by boat along the Canalbianco to Adria. La Via dell’Acqua offers another perspective on the water and landscape: near Trecenta, it passes the Gorghi, remnants of ancient river courses that are now protected wetlands. On the return journey, the route follows the river to Mulino Pizzon, an example of industrial archaeology. This route is designed as a nature-focused Bike & Boat tour.

Villa Badoer in Fratta Polesine offers another distinctive highlight: the Palladian villa is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Those interested in the archaeological, cultural and landscape heritage of the Polesine can visit the Museo dei Grandi Fiumi, where original artefacts are presented alongside interactive reproductions, scenographic displays, multimedia installations, dioramas and models.

Landscape, Regional Cuisine and Getting There

The landscape of the Po Delta in the Province of Rovigo includes fossil dunes, raised embankments, river floodplains, fishing valleys, lagoons and newly formed sandbanks. Activities in the Parco del Delta del Po include cycling along the embankments, boat and canoe trips, birdwatching and nature photography. Visitors can therefore choose between urban culture and a variety of nature experiences when planning their trip.

Regional specialities selected for Rovigo and its province include Insalata di Lusia IGP, Cozze di Scardovari DOP and Riso del Delta del Po IGP. Regional products can thus complement plans focused on culture and landscapes, without combining city visits and excursions around the province into a single itinerary.

For travellers arriving by train, Rovigo station provides assistance for passengers with disabilities or reduced mobility.
