Maser combines Palladian villa architecture with trails through the hilly landscape. When planning your trip, it is worth considering culture and hiking as separate focuses: the architectural history takes you to Villa Barbaro, the Tempietto and the artistic decoration of Villa di Maser; the Sentiero delle Due Rocche, with its approximate duration of five hours, calls for its own time block. This lets you weigh whether architectural history, a longer hike or both should shape your stay. The architectural history extends beyond Palladio.

Villa Architecture and History

Villa Barbaro in Maser is an outstanding example of the Palladian country villa type. The Tempietto di Villa Barbaro served two functions: it was the villa chapel and also the parish church for the Borgo di Maser. Thus, both its religious role within the villa and its relationship with the Borgo are part of its architectural history.

Villa di Maser was designed around 1550 by architect Andrea Palladio as a prestigious residence for the agricultural estate of brothers Daniele and Marcantonio Barbaro. Six magnificent rooms decorated with frescoes by Paolo Veronese and elegant stucco work by Alessandro Vittoria define its interior. Fresco painting and stucco stand alongside one another as distinct art forms. The villa complex, which has been altered several times, preserves medieval influences, particularly on its eastern side. Alongside the Palladian country villa type, an older architectural layer also emerges.

Hikes and Walks

The Sentiero delle Due Rocche is a ridge trail offering views over the hills of Maser. The route takes about five hours; apart from its length, it presents no particular difficulties. The approximate duration gives you a clear guide for planning your day, while the assessment of difficulty remains separate.

A walk with panoramic views can lead to an oratory. The final stretch is accessible only on foot, including from Forcella Mostaccin in Maser. The two types of outing offer different highlights: the Sentiero focuses on the ridge route and approximately five hours of walking, while the walk to the oratory features panoramic views and a final stretch on foot.
