Samatorza can be understood particularly clearly through two themes: the long history of the fortified settlement of San Leonardo and the trails leading to caves, churches, and other places in the Karst. This makes the village an interesting choice for a trip that combines cultural history with hiking or cycling.

San Leonardo and the Churches of Samatorza

The fortified settlement of San Leonardo near Samatorza dates from the Middle Bronze Age to the Early Middle Ages. It is generally considered one of the oldest and most extensive hillforts in the Trieste Karst. The site includes an inner wall 260 metres long, an outer wall about 600 metres long, and four terraces. The wall lengths give a sense of the settlement’s scale, while the four terraces also offer an impression of its architectural layout. Samatorza was first mentioned in writing in 1327. This date refers to the settlement’s first written mention, whereas San Leonardo’s archaeological period extends much further back.

On the summit of Monte San Leonardo, the remains of a small single-nave church with an apse have been preserved; it was dedicated to Saint Leonard. The building’s small scale contrasts with that of the extensive fortified settlement. Another church is San Ulderico: dating from the 15th century, it is one of the oldest churches in the Karst. A small rose window and a bell gable with three bells define its architecture. Behind the church is a small cemetery, where, alongside local residents, a Polish soldier who died in 1917 is buried.

Trails, Caves, and Historic Traces

The routes differ in their named landmarks and type. Trail No. 010 passes through Samatorza; nearby, it goes past Grotta Ternovizza and then continues to Ternova Piccola. The Gemina hiking route leads from Ternova to Samatorza along an unpaved path. The Aurisina–Samatorza–Precenico cycling route also reaches Samatorza. This makes for a clear comparison: Trail No. 010 is identified by Grotta Ternovizza and Ternova Piccola, Gemina by the path from Ternova, and the third route is designated as a cycling route.

Near Samatorza, Grotta Lesa is part of the Škaljunk Lupinc Park educational trail. The trail passes through the cave’s main entrance and exits again via a stone staircase. The educational trail reconstructs trenches and other military installations from the First World War. At Grotta Lesa, therefore, the route through the cave and the presentation of history are among the defining features. Grotta Azzurra is also known as Grotta Azzurra di Samatorza.
