Discover Bagnaria Arsa
Accommodation in Bagnaria Arsa
Bagnaria Arsa offers several clearly distinct cultural and historical points of interest for planning a trip: Roman traces near Sevegliano, churches from different centuries and the Museo delle Case Narranti. The Path of the Narrating Houses also offers a circular route, while the museum itself is dedicated to murals on house façades. If you choose a destination based on history, architecture or a specific route, these themes offer a way to explore Bagnaria Arsa.
Roman Traces and Architectural History
The Roman settlement near Sevegliano lay along the Aquileia–Norico road. It included a small sanctuary, possibly dedicated to Hercules. Finds from the archaeological site span the period from the 2nd century BC to the 4th century AD. However, continuous use throughout this entire period has not been established. The date range of the finds and the question of uninterrupted settlement are therefore two separate aspects of the settlement’s history.
The churches also offer insights into different phases of construction. The church of S. Maria Assunta di Castions was built in 1547 and remodelled in 1767 by Count Giuseppe Antonio di Strassoldo. The church of S. Andrea in Sevegliano was built in the mid-17th century over an existing building; it received its current bell tower in 1744. Another early date is that of the original church of Villa Antonini Dessy: it was built as a chapel in 1540. Taken together, these dates range from a 16th-century chapel to later remodelling and additions. This makes it possible to distinguish the religious buildings by their date of construction and architectural development.
Narrating Houses, Murals and the Circular Route
At the Museo delle Case Narranti in Campolonghetto, house façades become canvases. Artists from all over Italy depict the history, legends, crafts and traditions of Friuli. The open-air museum features murals on façades, bringing together different narrative themes in a visible collection of images. As of 2026, an app brings together the audio guides; they are also accessible via QR codes next to the murals. This gives the murals an additional narrative dimension, without limiting the themes depicted to a single chapter of local history.
The Path of the Narrating Houses is a circular route of about 9 km starting from Piazza Sant’Andrea. Bagnaria Arsa’s town hall is located in the piazza; there is also a large car park and the Garden of Poetry. Sections of the route follow the ancient Roman road Via Julia Augusta. This means there are several named landmarks to help you find your way at the starting point, while the approximate distance helps you decide whether the route suits you. Information about the route may be updated seasonally.
The Changing Landscape
The history of Bagnaria Arsa also includes the transformation of the area: it was once wet and marshy and was later drained. This change adds a landscape perspective to the Roman and ecclesiastical themes. The destination brings together a range of interests: archaeological history, historic buildings, narrative murals or a circular route with a specific starting point and approximate length.
