Comeglians: Church Art, Traditions and Trails
Accommodation in Comeglians
Comeglians can be explored through three themes: church art in the town, living traditions and trails within the municipality. When planning your trip, it is helpful to distinguish between places in the town and its hamlets: churches and historic buildings provide a cultural focus, while walking and hiking routes take in other parts of the municipality. This lets you plan your stay around whether local history, a particular tradition or outdoor activity is your priority.
Churches and Historic Sites
The Church of San Giorgio stands on a rocky outcrop. From there, you can look out over the town and much of the Canale di Gorto. The “cleva” walking path leads from Comeglians to the parish church of San Giorgio. It is a named walking route that connects the town with this church destination.
In Comeglians, the Gothic Chapel of San Nicolò has 15th-century frescoes. The Church of San Vincenzo martire also preserves a precisely located detail: to the left of the entrance is a niche, with the year 1864 inscribed on its lintel. The historic parts of the town also include notable buildings such as Cjase Boter and Palazzo Di Gleria.
You can find further artistic and architectural history in the municipality’s hamlets. A cultural trail passes through Povolaro and Maranzanis, where typical 17th- and 18th-century Carnic architectural styles have been made accessible to visitors through the Albergo Diffuso, and continues to the Church of San Floreano. There you will find an important wooden altar by Michael Path dating from 1541, other paintings and an Art Nouveau altarpiece by Giuseppe Da Pozzo.
In the hamlet of Mieli, the votive Chapel of San Leonardo preserves 16th-century frescoes by Lorenzo Paulitti of Ampezzo. In the hamlet of Tualis, the Church of San Vincenzo houses two notable wooden sculptures by Michael Parth, as well as folk votive offerings. The art sites in the hamlets thus complement the churches and historic buildings in the town with further clearly identified stops.
Das cidulas: Tradition and Community
The “das cidulas” fire tradition is still practised in Comeglians. On January 6, after nightfall, glowing wooden discs are thrown into the night. They are dedicated to an actual or hoped-for couple. The ritual is organised by the town’s unmarried men; at the same time, the tradition celebrates the community’s unity and solidarity. Its fixed date gives you a different point of reference for planning your trip than the churches and buildings that are there year-round.
Getting Around on Foot and by Bike
There are options for walks and hikes on different scales: the “cleva” leads to the parish church of San Giorgio, while a network of hiking trails connects Comeglians, Maranzanis and Povolaro in the lower part of the municipality. You can choose between a route to a specific destination and a network linking several places.
The Panoramica delle Vette starts in the hamlet of Tualis. It climbs the southern slope of Monte Crostis and reaches an altitude of 1,900 metres. The route is popular with cyclists; road conditions and access may vary. The walking path, hiking trail network and Panoramica cater to different travel interests: a church visit as a destination, connections between places, or a route along a mountain slope that is popular with cyclists.
Plan Your Journey and Accommodation Search
By car, you can reach Comeglians from the Carnia motorway exit via Tolmezzo, Villa Santina and Ovaro. By public transport, the route is via Udine railway station, with buses from Udine to Tolmezzo and onward from Tolmezzo to Comeglians. You can plan your journey according to your mode of transport: via the towns along the roads mentioned, or via the railway station and bus connections.
The “das cidulas” on January 6, as well as the trails and cycling route in the municipality, appeal to different travel interests. Searching for hotels in Comeglians and planning your itinerary around these interests connects your choice of location with the experiences that matter to your trip.
