Grimacco lies in the upper Cosizza Valley, in the heart of the Julian Prealps. For planning your trip, the area offers two distinct highlights: trails and viewpoints around Monte San Martino, and traditions, collections and rural architecture. This can help you decide whether to link Grimacco primarily with an excursion into the mountains or with cultural history and local customs. For further trip planning, you can also visit the page Grimacco Inferiore.

Mountain trails and views at Monte San Martino

The summit area of Monte San Martino is a panoramic viewpoint with far-reaching views. From there, you can see the Colovrat ridge and the villages of Drenchia and Clabuzzaro. The summit is 987 metres high. The Clastra–San Martino nature trail (CAI 761) reaches the old 13th-century church of San Martino and the panoramic summit. The route thus combines a clearly identified historic destination with views over the ridge and villages.

In several places, the nature trail crosses the Cammino delle 44 chiesette votive of the Natisone Valleys. Before Canalaz, a forest road branches off from the road and climbs the western slope to a large mown meadow. From there, a path leads to the church and the summit of Monte San Martino. The routes differ in their characteristics: the CAI 761 has repeated crossings with another named route, while the route before Canalaz follows a sequence of forest road, meadow and then path.

Just after Seuza, another forest road branches off towards Topolò. It follows the right bank of the Val Codariana watercourse for some distance. After crossing the Zavelincelman stream, it becomes a path. Bear in mind that trail conditions on this section may vary. The routes described therefore differ not only in their destinations, but also in their distinctive stages and in the transition from forest road to path.

Traditions, architecture and collections

Cultural events can also be clearly distinguished. In Clodig di Grimacco, the funeral of Carnival is celebrated every year on Ash Wednesday. Topolò hosts an international avant-garde festival every July. One event is tied to Ash Wednesday, the other to July; this difference can help you choose a travel period based on the cultural highlight you are looking for.

Traditional rural architecture, with houses made of stone and wood, has been preserved in Brida. The Castagno di Canalaz is a monumental tree more than 400 years old. These two examples represent different aspects of the local landscape: traditional building methods and a natural monument.

The Museo Ruttar preserves objects that illustrate the customs of rural society in the Natisone Valleys at the beginning of the 20th century. The Žefcjova family collection comprises documents and objects related to life in the Natisone Valleys from 1600 to the present day. By comparison, the museum focuses on customs at the beginning of the 20th century, while the family collection covers a period from the year 1600 to the present.
