Discover Pozzuolo del Friuli
Accommodation in Pozzuolo del Friuli
Pozzuolo del Friuli can be explored through several clearly distinct themes: an important archaeological settlement landscape, historic places and museums, and sporting and culinary events. When planning your trip, it helps to understand these differences: the history of settlement dates back to the Early Neolithic, while other themes relate to specific events in the 20th century or a customary festival season.
Archaeological Settlement Landscape and Sant’Andrea
The archaeological complex of Pozzuolo includes the rises of Cjastiei and La Culine on the left bank of the Torrente CormĂ´r. It also includes the surrounding terraces and level areas. The complex comprises a fortified settlement, production areas and four burial grounds. This brings different elements of a settlement into view within a single archaeological context: its fortifications, production and burial sites.
The Castelliere di Pozzuolo del Friuli is one of the few long-lived fortified settlements in the central Friulian plain. Another important prehistoric site is Sammardenchia. Its settlement is one of the largest Early Neolithic settlements in northern Italy. This classification gives the area's archaeological history a specific chronological and regional context.
The Church of Sant’Andrea is also defined by its location: it stands on higher ground within Pozzuolo del Friuli's historic fortifications, on the edge of today's settlement. The new Church of Sant’Andrea was completed in 1648 and consecrated in May of that year by Patriarch Marco Gradenigo. Its location and construction history thus provide a different historical perspective from the prehistoric settlements.
Museums and Historical Themes
The Centro Visite Storico Archeologico explores the ancient history of the Pozzuolo del Friuli area and, in particular, the prehistoric settlement of Sammardenchia. Displays, copies and reconstructions of ancient artefacts immerse visitors in the world of a 7,000-year-old farming village. The focus is both on life in this reconstructed setting and on the archaeological finds and their interpretation. The Centro also hosts experimental archaeology workshops, aimed especially at children.
The Museo storico della Campagna di Russia covers a different subject. It documents the Italian Army's campaign in Russia during the Second World War, from 1941 to 1943. The Civico Museo Storico is also located in Cargnacco, in the former church of Cargnacco. This makes it possible to distinguish between the prehistoric interpretation presented at Sammardenchia and the museums' different historical contexts.
History, Cycling Route and Seasonal Events
Pozzuolo del Friuli is associated with the attack by Genoese cavalrymen and Novara Lancers on 30 October 1917. Another historical connection is the Italian Alpini's campaign in Russia in 1942–43. These dates place different events in their historical context; the Museo storico della Campagna di Russia focuses on the period from 1941 to 1943.
For a different kind of trip planning, the CormĂ´r cycling route offers a specific connection to the area: it passes through Pozzuolo del Friuli. An internationally renowned speedway track is located in the hamlet of Terenzano. The Sagra dello Struzzo is a seasonal culinary event. It is usually held between July and August, and the festival offers Friulian specialities made with ostrich meat for tasting. These themes also differ in their timing: archaeology and historical connections provide a cultural framework, while the Sagra is tied to its customary season.
