Sottoselva offers a cultural and historical focus, reflected above all in the Church of Saints Lorenzo and Sebastiano and the parish’s religious traditions. This provides a specific local point of reference when planning your accommodation. Palmanova offers a separate perspective on fortified urban history, collections, and underground galleries.

Church and Religious Traditions in Sottoselva

The Church of Saints Lorenzo and Sebastiano was established in 1813 by combining the churches of Sottoselva and Villa San Lorenzo. The present structure was completed in 1847. The dates mark two distinct stages: the merging of the churches in 1813 and the completion of the present building in 1847. A holy water font dating from 1562 came from the demolished Church of San Lorenzo. The present church thus brings together different periods: the history of the older font and the construction of the present structure.

Religious events also provide a guide to the year. The traditional Perdon dal Rosari celebration takes place in Sottoselva on the third Sunday in October. The parish also takes part each year in the pilgrimage to the Madonna di Barbana shrine. A specifically dated observance and an annual pilgrimage are therefore two distinct occasions. If you would like to plan your trip around a religious celebration, the October Sunday provides a clear point of reference.

Palmanova: Museum, Fortress, and Getting There

The Civic Historical Museum in Trevisan Palace is a starting point for understanding Palmanova’s history and the development of its complex fortified urban structure. The collections include original documents, drawings, weapons, armor, and memorabilia from the Venetian, Napoleonic, Austrian, and Italian periods. This range of objects brings together written, visual, and material evidence from several historical periods. The museum thus focuses on the city’s development and its different eras.

The Fortress of Palmanova was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List on July 9, 2017. Its history also includes a dense network of underground galleries, some of which are equipped for visits. The Gallerie Sotterranee di Contromina comprise a 550-meter underground route for exploring Palmanova’s defensive system. The museum and galleries offer different ways to explore the city’s history: the collections place historical evidence in context, while the underground route focuses on the defensive system.

Palmanova is served by the Udine–Cervignano del Friuli railway line and by the ARRIVA UDINE – Autoservizi FVG (TPL FVG) bus service. These are two transportation options to consider when planning your trip to Palmanova.
