Treppo Grande can be explored through several themes: its moraine hills, the history of Castello di Zegliacco and the brickmaking culture of the Museo delle Fornaci. There are also routes of historical and natural interest, as well as cycling opportunities. You can focus on the landscape, local history and activities according to your own interests.

Landscape and routes

Treppo Grande lies among gentle moraine hills, formed about 9,000 years ago by deposits of glacial debris. Their formation gives the landscape a clear geological context and complements the cultural themes with a natural perspective. If you like to understand places through their landscape history, the formation of the hills is a tangible starting point.

Treppo Grande has routes of historical and natural interest, as well as mountain biking trails. The routes offer different thematic focuses, while mountain biking puts a particular activity at the heart of the experience. The Alpe-Adria Cycle Route provides another reference point for planning a cycling trip: its Venzone-to-Udine section passes through Treppo Grande. The name of the section places the town on a clearly identified route.

Castle Route and Brickmaking Culture

Castello di Zegliacco is included in the “Il controllo della Pontebbana” hiking and castle route programme. It has been documented since 1174 and was converted into a stately residence in the 18th century. These two details offer different historical perspectives: an early record and a later transformation of the castle. Its inclusion in the programme also adds a named route to the history of the Castello.

The Museo delle Fornaci di Treppo Grande offers a different cultural perspective. Its permanent exhibition is devoted to brickmaking culture in Friuli Venezia Giulia and describes clay extraction, as well as the shaping and drying processes used to make bricks. An educational area also explains how a Hoffmann kiln works. The extraction of raw materials, manufacturing processes and kiln operation each offer a different insight into brickmaking. Unlike the Castello, the focus here is not on the history of a historic building, but on the processing of materials.

Church, Villa and Choral Tradition

The old Church of San Michele Arcangelo in Vendoglio contains a fresco cycle by G. B. Thanner dating from 1555. Villa Bellavitis is a 19th-century cultural heritage site. In chronological terms, the fresco cycle of 1555, the conversion of the Castello in the 18th century and Villa Bellavitis in the 19th century belong to three distinct periods. Treppo Grande’s cultural history can therefore also be explored through different eras.

The Coro polifonico Alpe Adria di Treppo Grande adds another cultural dimension: it has been a local institution since 1990. This brings a musical aspect to the historic sites, art and brickmaking culture. Treppo Grande thus offers a range of themes to explore, from landscapes and routes to architecture, art and choral culture.
