Tricesimo: Churches, Frescoes and Local History
Accommodation in Tricesimo
Tricesimo can be considered as a travel destination through several themes: sacred architectural history, medieval architecture, a large public park and historic cultural events. Permanent buildings stand alongside individual past events—a distinction that is important when planning a stay.
Churches and Art from Different Centuries
The present-day parish church of Santa Maria della Purificazione brings together several periods. Its likely origins date back to the 7th and 8th centuries; it was first mentioned in a document in 1234. Its early history is therefore a well-founded probability, while 1234 marks its first documented mention. The present church building was consecrated in 1789 and built to a design by Domenico Schiavi, an architect from Tolmezzo. The early history of the church site and the construction period of the present building are thus two distinct chronological reference points.
The Chiesa di San Giorgio offers another perspective on sacred architecture. It is one of the oldest churches in Tricesimo; its present architecture has Romanesque origins dating from the 9th to the 12th centuries. In the Chiesa di San Pelagio in Adorgnano, by contrast, the focus is on painting: it is home to an important fresco cycle by Gian Paolo Thanner, commissioned in 1535. For those interested in culture, architectural history and a clearly dated commission for sacred art complement one another.
Medieval Architecture and the Townscape
When it comes to the castles, it is worth distinguishing between their names. At Castello Valentinis, parts of the medieval complex remain, including a circuit wall with passageways, bridges and six corner towers. Castello di Tricesimo has been documented since the 13th century. The two accounts emphasize different aspects: surviving structural features shape the description of Castello Valentinis, while the historical dating is central to Castello di Tricesimo.
Green Space and Past Cultural Events
Parco comunale Luigi Tami “Eros” offers a different focus from the churches and castles. This large public green space is intended for recreation, sport and contact with nature. If green spaces and leisure activities are also important in choosing a destination, this park is one of the defining features of Tricesimo.
The events in the Estate a Villa Ciceri series took place in the park of Villa Ciceri in 2025. The programme included two concerts, two author talks with readings and musical interludes, as well as a live book. That year, the series reached its seventh edition. Music and literature were thus distinct elements of a specific cultural programme from 2025.
Cjaminade Furlane a Tresesin was a walking route with five stops for discovering the Tricesimo area. The format differed from a single building: several stops combined walking with the area itself as the theme. For weighing up your interests, it adds a past walking-focused event format to the historic buildings.
A Historical Culinary Connection
Local cuisine also has a historical connection. In 1824, the poet Pietro Zorutti praised Tricesimo’s white asparagus for its quality and the purifying properties attributed to it. The specific year makes asparagus a subject of local history, adding a culinary aspect to the cultural and architectural highlights.
Churches and castles offer points of interest for architectural and art history; the public park is intended for recreation, sport and contact with nature. More destinations: Pavia di Udine, Rivignano, Savogna di Cividale, Colloredo di Monte Albano, Teor, Corno Di Rosazzo, Ovaro and Moruzzo.
