Concordia Sagittaria brings together Roman archaeology, evidence of church history, the Lemene River and regional events within a compact thematic area. If you want to explore Veneto independently while looking for a place with tangible historical sites and a strong connection to the river landscape and local cuisine, the town offers several different approaches: you can explore archaeological sites and the cathedral, get an overview of a longer cycling and walking route along the Lemene, or discover events with a regional connection.

Roman traces around the cathedral

Beneath the cathedral lies an archaeological site with the remains of a three-aisled early Christian basilica. A geometric mosaic floor and a raised presbytery bench can be seen there. The same site also preserves a well-preserved paved section of the Roman Via Annia and the remains of the bishop's palace. This makes it possible to view architectural evidence from the early Christian period and the history of the Roman city in one place.

The Via delle Terme archaeological site preserves a section of the north-eastern city wall and an Augustan postern gate. The thermal complex there went through several phases of use between the 1st and 3rd centuries AD. It included a caldarium and a tepidarium. The caldarium covered approximately 100 m²; its mosaic floor was later replaced with marble slabs, while the walls were decorated with figurative frescoes.

Another focal point is the Domus dei Signini. In Parco dei Signini, opposite Via dei Pozzi Romani, several rooms and their floors are visible. The archaeological site comprises the remains of three Roman houses built in four construction phases. The Augustan phase includes rooms with opus signinum and a black-and-white mosaic. The Roman picture is complemented by the Augustan bridge, which stands over an old riverbed of the Reghena near the entrance to Via Annia towards Concordia.

Cathedral, riverbank and access

The cathedral of Concordia Sagittaria stands on the banks of the Lemene River and is dedicated to Saint Stephen the Protomartyr. The original cathedral, known as the Basilica Apostolorum, was consecrated in 389 (?) by Saint Chromatius, Bishop of Aquileia. The present basilica was built by Bishop Antonio III Feletto in 1466. A lift and ramps are available to access the upper exhibition area and the lower area of the early Christian basilica at the cathedral complex.

GiraLemene and Bosco delle Lame

GiraLemene provides a link between cultural and landscape experiences. The 38-kilometre cultural and natural history cycling and walking route runs along the Lemene River and connects Gruaro, Portogruaro, Concordia Sagittaria and Caorle in a continuous route. This places Concordia Sagittaria within a larger course along the river, without separating the town's archaeological sites from their own historical character.

As an independent natural area, Bosco delle Lame complements the historical sites. The area covers 24 hectares, including eight hectares of wetland, and has a high level of biodiversity. This creates different focal points for trip planning: Roman and early Christian evidence in the town, a longer route along the Lemene, or an exploration of a designated wetland.

Events and regional cuisine

The Festa dei Ragazzi has been held in Concordia Sagittaria for sixty years and brings together children, young people, families, supervisors and volunteers. The event Il Fiume Lemene – la renga offers a culinary and historical perspective. On the two Sundays, 15 and 22 February, it includes a guided tour of ancient Concordia, the Roman city, as well as a tasting based on Renga.

The Renga Tour also highlights the local gastronomic tradition of Concordia Sagittaria. During this cicchetti tour, restaurateurs create various cicchetti as a tribute to the dish Renga, which has historically been associated with the town. In this way, regional cuisine adds its own perspective on local history to the archaeological and landscape themes.
