Portogruaro combines a historic centre with a Venetian character and a diverse museum landscape. If you would like to combine history, architecture and art during your stay, you will find various points of interest here: stone bridges, medieval city gates, churches, as well as calli and campielli shape the historic centre. This cityscape is complemented by exhibitions ranging from antiquity to contemporary art.

Historic Centre and Molini di Sant’Andrea

In the historic centre, stone bridges, medieval city gates and churches are among the defining features. The calli and campielli give the town a Venetian character. Portogruaro can therefore be appreciated not only through individual sights, but also through the combination of different architectural forms. The Molini di Sant’Andrea offer a distinct historical connection: they are already documented in a papal bull dating from 1186.

Museums from Antiquity to the Present

The Museo Archeologico Nazionale Concordiese was the first museum founded in Veneto. Its exhibition includes architectural elements, funerary stelae, portraits and epigraphic material. Epigraphic material complements the visual and architectural objects with inscribed artefacts. There are also three mosaic floors, one of which depicts the Three Graces. Those interested in ancient history and its surviving evidence will therefore find several different groups of objects in one exhibition.

The Museo della Città is housed in the building of the ancient Torre di Sant'Agnese, dating from the 13th century. This tower is one of three surviving medieval towers in Portogruaro. A visit to the museum therefore combines an exploration of the town’s history directly with a historic building and makes the medieval dimension of the town visible in a specific structure.

Contemporary Art and Luigi Russolo

More recent art history is also part of the cultural offering. Since 1993, the Galleria Ai Molini has once again been hosting exhibitions of contemporary art. Alongside the archaeological and medieval themes, this provides an exhibition venue that focuses on current artistic positions.

Casa Russolo displays oil paintings, etching plates and prints by Luigi Russolo. Etching plates are the printing plates used to produce etchings. The artistic development of Futurism and Luigi Russolo is also presented there through a video projection and two monitors in four languages. Casa Russolo thus combines original or preserved works with a multilingual form of interpretation.

Note the Visiting Arrangements

One aspect of the visiting arrangements is important for the Space Mazzini art exhibition: it can only be visited by prior telephone reservation. If you include this exhibition venue in your selection, this telephone reservation is therefore a requirement for the visit.
