San Giorgio di Livenza between canals and cycle paths

San Giorgio di Livenza can be explored particularly through its waterscapes, cycle paths, and preserved traces of its history. The Livenza Morta Canal crosses the town to the west. The Brian Canal also shapes the surrounding area: Cycle Path 9 “Dal mare alle valli” leads to this canal and then continues along Via Bonotto, offering views of the river landscape.

Cycle tours with different route profiles

For a manageable bike tour, Cycle Path 9 “Dal mare alle valli” is a good choice. It is classified as easy and takes three hours.

A second option is the “Lungo il fiume Livenza” cycle tour. It is 31 kilometres long, also classified as easy, and runs on asphalt, gravel, and unpaved paths. This tour reaches San Giorgio di Livenza via Via Brian.

The Livenza Morta is also part of the documented waterways landscape. The section from San Giorgio di Livenza (La Salute) to the village of Brian is one of Caorle’s fishing waters. This connects the local orientation around the water with a section explicitly designated as fishing waters.

Pilgrimage route and quiet places along the Brian Canal

San Giorgio di Livenza is also a destination on a stage of the Cammino della Luce pilgrimage route. The route from Concordia Sagittaria to San Giorgio di Livenza covers 17 kilometres and is stated to take five hours. This provides two clearly different ways of exploring the area when choosing between a cycling route and a walking route.

A cultural landmark in Valle Tagli is the Chapel of Santa Maria degli Angeli. It is located in the countryside beside the Brian Canal and was built around 1940 on behalf of Giorgio and Carlotta Romiati. Inside, artistic motifs draw on the Basilica of Assisi. On 25 November 2023, the official FAI programme “Apprendisti Ciceroni” included guided tours of the Chiesetta di Santa Maria degli Angeli in Valle Tagli near San Giorgio di Livenza. This date refers to a past programme and not to current opening arrangements.

Church history and lapidarium

The history of the town can also be read in its parish church and lapidarium. The former 18th-century church was demolished in 1926 to raise the right bank of the Brian Canal and protect the drained areas. The new parish church was opened for worship on 29 September 1929 and consecrated by Bishop E. Beccegato on 30 September 1934. The lapidarium in the building preserves finely worked stone fragments from the former 18th-century church. Thus, the former church, its structural alteration, and the later parish church form a comprehensible chronological sequence.

The local events calendar includes “Settembre Sangiorgese”, the village festival of San Giorgio di Livenza. It takes place on the first three weekends of September and complements the themes of water, cycling, pilgrimage, and sacred culture with a festive local event.
