Vicenza combines an exceptionally rich Palladian tradition with museums, churches, parks and excursions in the surrounding area. The UNESCO World Heritage Site comprises the city of Vicenza with 23 buildings designed by Andrea Palladio. If you are looking for a hotel in Vicenza, you will therefore find above all an urban setting in which architecture, art history and religious sites are closely interconnected.

Palladio and the city's museums

The Teatro Olimpico is the world's first covered theater built of masonry. Andrea Palladio constructed it between 1580 and 1585; it was inaugurated upon completion. Today, it hosts theater and music productions. The Basilica Palladiana is Vicenza's landmark. Its distinctive feature is the Serliana loggias designed by Palladio, which surround the medieval Palazzo della Ragione. The terrace offers a monumental viewing platform in the heart of Vicenza. From there, the 360-degree view extends across the historic old town and the Berici Hills. The terrace is fully accessible to people with mobility impairments; a dedicated lift provides access to the second floor.

The Palladio Museum displays original Palladio drawings together with models and videos. The Silk Room is dedicated to silk production and Vicenza's international silk trade. For arriving by public transport, the Venice–Milan railway line to Vicenza station is a documented option; from there, a ten-minute walk leads to the museum. Palazzo Chiericati, which Palladio designed for Girolamo Chiericati in 1550, houses the city museum. It preserves and displays more than 35,000 works from the 13th to the 20th century, including paintings, sculptures, prints and applied art. The museum is accessible to people with disabilities.

Other highlights include the Gallerie d’Italia – Palazzo Leoni Montanari, with three permanent art collections belonging to the bank, and the Jewellery Museum, one of the first museums in Europe devoted exclusively to jewelry and goldsmithing. Palazzo Leoni Montanari was the first museum venue of the Gallerie d’Italia to open to the public. An immersive tour also combines a museum with the cathedral's archaeological area and focuses on early Christian Vicenza in the 4th and 5th centuries AD; tablets, videos, podcasts and animations are used for this purpose.

Monte Berico, churches and urban history

The Sanctuary of Santa Maria di Monte Berico was established following Marian apparitions on March 7, 1426, and August 1, 1428, on the hill south of Vicenza. In 1578, Andrea Palladio enlarged the sanctuary with a large square nave. From the historic center, Monte Berico can be reached on foot via Viale X Giugno or via the 192-step Scalette di Monte Berico. The Museum of Sacred Art displays more than 500 artifacts from the 14th to the 21st century, including Greek, Russian and Neo-Byzantine post-Byzantine icons.

The Church of Santa Corona was founded in 1270 and was the center of a Dominican monastery complex. Its crypt contains the Valmarana Chapel, which Palladio designed for Antonio Valmarana in 1576. The church containing the chapel in its crypt can be visited for an admission fee or during religious ceremonies as part of the city's museum system. The Museo del Risorgimento e della Resistenza collects memories of events and figures from Italian history connected with Vicenza. It is located in Villa Guiccioli on Colle Ambellicopoli, where the people of Vicenza resisted in defense of the city in 1848; the museum is accessible to people with disabilities.

Parks, cuisine and routes into the surrounding area

For quieter areas within the city, Campo Marzo and the Giardini Salvi are among Vicenza's historic parks. In Parco Querini, a tree-lined avenue leads to a small temple surrounded by greenery. The natural history section of the Natural History and Archaeology Museum explains the characteristics of the area, particularly those of the Berici region. A local culinary tradition is BacalĂ  alla vicentina, a dish developed by the people of Vicenza that has been part of Vicenza's cuisine for more than 500 years.

Lake Fimon lies nearby and is a lake basin of great natural-history and archaeological interest. In front of the sanctuary is Piazzale della Vittoria, a panoramic square with views of Vicenza's city center and the surrounding mountains. For a cycling tour, the Riviera Berica cycle path begins near the Arco delle Scalette and runs along a disused railway line. After returning along the cycle path to Longara, the route continues on minor roads toward Lake Fimon. According to the Palladio route guide, 16 villas in the province of Vicenza have been included on the World Heritage List; the same route guide describes a route through the historic center of Vicenza. The Vicenza GOLD Card grants access to 11 attractions in the city's museums and visitor offerings.
