Between the Piave Valley, the lake and mountain trails

Domegge di Cadore lies on the right-hand side of the upper Piave Valley and on the shores of Lago Centro Cadore. The area around the lake is framed by the Spalti di Toro. This gives your stay a variety of experiences: short walks by the water, longer mountain hikes, historic churches and regional specialties. The CAI section of Domegge di Cadore maintains 16 trails with a total length of 50 kilometres. The local hiking options cover different levels of difficulty, including Alta Via No. 6.

Hiking trails with clear differences

For a short introduction, municipal Route No. 1 leads in 30 minutes from Piazza dei Martiri in Domegge via Vallesella to the bridge over the lake. Easy Route No. 2 runs from Vallesella via Pignola to the Molinà chapel. Another option is the 1.5-hour nature trail loop via Talagona, which follows the lake on the way back. This makes it possible to compare different trail lengths and landscape impressions without equating the routes in terms of their content.

Route No. 7 starts at the square in Domegge and reaches Rifugio Cercenà in one hour. The same route takes two hours to reach Rifugio Padova. The Eremo dei Romiti is the destination of short excursions and also the starting point for trails to Col Cros, Montanel and in the direction of Spalti di Toro. Easier walking options in the area also include a lakeside path and the Pian dei Buoi plateau. At the Vallesella rock-climbing area along Route No. 1, there are climbing routes of varying difficulty as well as a short via ferrata.

Churches, monasteries and works of art

The Eremo dei Romiti was built as a monastery in 1720 and is one of the buildings constructed in the 18th century; the adjoining church was built in 1724. Every year on 24 June, the feast day of Saint John the Baptist, Mass is celebrated in the small chapel at the Eremo. The parish church of San Giorgio in Domegge was built between 1861 and 1865 and consecrated on 20 April 1933. The dome and chancel were frescoed by Bargellini in 1930. The church also houses the painting “Madonna and Child Enthroned between Saint Apollonia and Saint Lucy”, attributed to Marco Vecellio.

The church of San Rocco houses the painting “Madonna Enthroned with Child between Saints Roch and Sebastian”, attributed to Francesco Vecellio. The church of Madonna della Neve (S. Antonio) in Val di Croce was built in 1508 along the former road to Lozzo and consecrated in 1659. The Chiesa della Madonna delle Grazie – Valesella includes a cell formerly inhabited by a hermit, considered the only surviving example in Cadore. The church was built between 1510 and 1515 by Nicolò Ruopèl as a votive church following the Battle of Vallesella in 1509 against the troops of Maximilian I of Habsburg. Casa Valmassoi is also part of the historic building stock: the building was originally constructed in 1360 and repurposed and modified several times over the centuries.

A regional specialty

Local specialties include La Cartufola. Its core product is a preserved food made from thin slices of Jerusalem artichoke pickled in oil and artisanally prepared according to an old local recipe. La Cartufola specialties continue to be served on the menu at Antica Hostaria Serenissima and can be sampled there. Visitors can also buy and collect La Cartufola products there.
