For planning your trip, a wide range of experiences await: the Passo della Mauria lies entirely within the area of Lorenzago di Cadore, while trails, viewpoints, climbing routes and religious sites each offer a distinct focus. The connection via Strada Statale 52 is also useful for orientation: it leads through the Passo della Mauria from Cadore to Carnia.

Mountain landscapes and trails around Lorenzago di Cadore

Monte Mauria features funnel-shaped dolines carved out by water, giving the landscape a clearly recognizable geological characteristic. The Big Bench #303 offers a viewpoint overlooking Monte Cridola. The Parco dei Sogni is described as a panoramic road approximately one kilometer long, complementing the exploration of the landscape with a short, clearly defined route.

For a hike, CAI Trail 336, classified as a hiking trail, is particularly relevant. It begins at Castello di Mirabello in Lorenzago di Cadore, is 9 kilometers long in total and reaches a maximum elevation of 1,969 meters. Those seeking an alpine experience will find several climbing routes for experienced climbers at Falesia a Croera. The ascent to Ricovero Miaron is part of the “Cadore Regno delle Ciaspe” loop trail and can be undertaken with snowshoes or skis.

Churches, museum and spiritual sites

The Chiesa della Madonna della Difesa is one of four votive churches in Cadore dedicated to the Madonna della Difesa. It was built after the plague of 1511–1512, which claimed the lives of approximately one third of the population. The Chiesa Parrocchiale dei Santi Ermagora e Fortunato contains a painting by Cesare Vercello depicting Saint Anthony, as well as several frescoes by Antonio Schiavi. A step-free side entrance is available there for people with disabilities.

The Museo dei Papi displays photographs of Karol Wojtyla during special official and private moments, as well as valuable objects that belonged to him. Since 2007, it has also featured a room dedicated to the presence of Pope Benedict XVI. The Santuario all'aperto di San Giovanni Paolo II Papa hosts religious events, pilgrimages and other moments of spirituality. The Sentiero dei Papi leads to this Santuario and passes through places where Giovanni Paolo II and Benedetto XVI stayed and spent moments in prayer.

Historic site with restricted access

Castello di Mirabello dates back to 1890 and was built as a summer residence for the Lombard industrialist and senator of the Kingdom, Giovanni Facheris. When planning your visit, it is important to note that Castello di Mirabello is not open for sightseeing; access is reserved for guests. At the same time, it marks the beginning of CAI Trail 336 and therefore serves a different purpose from a freely accessible sightseeing destination.
