Accommodation in Pelos Di Cadore
Pelos Di Cadore combines distinctive religious architecture with trails leading to historic fortifications and an events calendar that also includes culinary and sporting events.
San Bernardino da Siena and the History of the Area
The Church of San Bernardino da Siena in Pelos has a Gothic octagonal nave and a star-shaped ceiling with prominent ribs. Its current form combines older architectural features with extensive reconstruction: the church was almost completely rebuilt in 1947 while preserving the architectural features of 15th-century mountain chapels.
The chancel is particularly informative. It is the oldest part of the church and belongs to the original 15th-century building. Those interested in regional religious architecture and historic architectural forms will therefore find several layers of history in one place: the chancel of the original building, the features reminiscent of 15th-century mountain chapels, and the church renovated after 1947.
If you would like to visit the church as a group, telephone contact with the parish at 0435 77006 is required. This allows you to incorporate the visit specifically into your plans without equating it with general opening hours.
Trails to Col Pelos and through the Forra del Romotoi
The surrounding area can also be explored through clearly described trail experiences. The CAI circular hike leads to Pelos and then via Via Pra and a forest road to the Battery and the trench of Col Pelos. The road and the Battery of Col Pelos were built in 1889–1890. This trail therefore combines movement through the landscape with a specific historic destination.
Another option is the sixth stage of the Altavia dei Forti dell’Oltrepiave. It starts and ends in Pelos and includes the Forra del Romotoi, a natural canyon with very high walls. The canyon is partly equipped with fixed aids and is fully accessible on foot. For planning your day, the key choice is therefore between a circular hike via Via Pra and Col Pelos and a stage starting and ending in Pelos. The two descriptions emphasize different aspects, without requiring them to be interpreted as a single route.
Events with a Local Connection
Pelos has hosted stages of the Criterium Cadorino athletics series. This includes a stage listed for 2024; the third stage has been announced for 2026.
Pelos’s 2025 program also included Polenta e Baccalà , with a public tasting of polenta and salt cod in the marquee in Valle. The Torneo dell’Oltrepiave football tournament at the sports field in the hamlet of Pra was also listed for 2025. These different occasions provide additional points of reference if you would like to plan your stay around a specific local program.
