Sospirolo is ideal for a trip that combines natural experiences with geological and historical highlights. Around the Brenton Valley, Val Falcina and Lake Vedana, you will find both short paths leading to striking landscapes and more challenging mountain destinations. There are also remains from Late Antiquity and the Middle Ages, adding another dimension to your stay.

Water, Gorges and Distinctive Landscapes

In the Brenton Valley, 8 km by road from Sospirolo, the lower section of the valley features spectacular waterfalls and potholes formed by erosion. The cavities of these potholes reach depths of up to 4 m. You can reach the Cadini del Brenton via an easy, equipped path near the bridge over the Mis stream in Gena Bassa. This location has a cool, humid microclimate that favors rhododendrons and mountain pines – plants that normally occur at higher elevations.

The Soffia stream also shapes the landscape: its water plunges 12 m into a narrow gorge beneath a rock overhang that projects approximately 16 m. The Cascate della Soffia can be reached in just a few minutes from Bar alla Soffia and the Chiesetta di San Remedio via an equipped path. Val Falcina is also significant for plant species found farther east; some reach the western limit of their distribution here.

The Masiere form the terminal moraine of an ancient glacier. Together with the area around Lake Vedana, they form a nature reserve of botanical and geological value.

Hikes for Different Levels of Experience

For a mountain excursion, the route to Monte Sperone first leads from Sospirolo along an asphalt road to the Cappelletta degli Alpini. The marked trail then continues to the summit via the Selletta del Dof. From the summit, you can look out over the Val Belluna, the Belluno Prealps, Monte Pizzocco with its impressive north face, and the Monti del Sole range.

The trail to Piz Vedana climbs from 540 m to 1324 m and is suitable for experienced hikers. The Val Falcina nature trail has a different character: it is a short circular route and is also suitable for less experienced hikers. The starting point is at the bridge over the Falcina stream, which you can reach via Provincial Road No. 2 through the Valle del Mis. You can park your car at Pian della Falcina. Canoeing is also possible in the Valle del Mis.

History between Vedana and Santa Giuliana

Historical sites can add another dimension to the landscape. Around the 15th century, the Vedana hospice was converted into a charterhouse by Carthusian monks of the Order of Saint Bruno. The San Marco Hospice in Vedana, which also included San Gottardo, was already receiving travelers in the 11th century who were traveling along the Canale d’Agordo. At Santa Giuliana, the discovery of a Roman inscription confirms the importance of the settlement site since Late Antiquity.

For further direct destinations at this level, you can choose from Lorenzago Di Cadore, Tignes, Farra D'alpago, Santo Stefano Di Cadore, Quero, Pascoli, Soccher and Colmean.
