Cavanella Po between Po history and the cycle route

When considering Cavanella Po as a place to stay in Veneto, three themes stand out: the Po’s water management history, the VENTO long-distance cycle route and a specific bus connection. This makes it possible to discover the area in different ways. You can trace historical interventions in the waterways, place a section of an interregional cycle route in context or check the journey using a named bus line.

The Taglio di Porto Viro and the history of the Po

The historic Taglio di Porto Viro is particularly notable. It diverted the Po’s waters from Cavanella Po (Porto di Loreo) to the Sacca di Goro; an approximately 7-kilometre-long artificial canal was created for this purpose. The Taglio di Porto Viro was created in 1604 to protect the Venetian Lagoon from the considerable sediment deposits carried by the northern branches of the Po. This distinction is important for planning your trip: it is not merely a place name, but a specific water management project with a named starting point, destination region and approximate length.

The history adds a second perspective to today’s orientation around the cycle route. While the VENTO follows the course of the Po as an interregional connection, the Taglio di Porto Viro focuses on a historical intervention in the river’s water flow. Both references help you view Cavanella Po not in isolation, but in the broader context of the Po, the Adriatic and the Venetian Lagoon.

Through Cavanella Po on the VENTO cycle route

In June 2025, a section of the VENTO cycle route was inaugurated in Cavanella Po. The section near Cavanella Po forms part of the VENTO long-distance cycle route, which runs from Turin to the Adriatic and Venice and largely follows the course of the Po. Alongside the historical water management context, this provides a clearly identified cycle route connection, extending from a local section to a long route through northern Italy.

The technical classification of the route is also documented: the VENTO cycle route includes functional section III, construction lot A, from Loreo via Via Cavanella Po to Porto Viro. This designation distinguishes the specific section from the entire long-distance cycle route. If you are planning your journey along the Po, you can therefore consider Cavanella Po both via the local connection from Loreo to Porto Viro and via the broader VENTO route.

Bus connection and other local points of interest

Busitalia’s E602 bus line connects Adria and Ariano Ferrarese and has a branch to Cavanella Po.

Another notable point of reference is the Idrovora Cavanella Po. It was built in 1969. The building is 48 metres long and was built with eight electric pumps. The Taglio di Porto Viro was created in 1604; the Idrovora Cavanella Po was built in 1969.

Archaeological addition in Loreo

If you would like to expand your focus from water management and the cycle route to archaeology, the Antiquarium di Loreo displays archaeological finds from excavations at the Roman villa of Corte Cavanella. This reference leads from river and drainage topics to an archaeological site.
