Porto Viro can be explored through several clearly distinct experiences: fossil dunes, wetlands and lagoon waters stand alongside birdwatching, regional everyday culture and Venetian engineering history. If you do not want to focus your stay on just one individual excursion destination, the surrounding area offers various ways to experience the landscape and history.

Fossil Dunes and Coastal Landscapes

North of the town centre lies the Pineta di Fornaci. It is characterised by fossil dunes, meaning sand formations shaped by the wind near ancient coastlines. The Dune fossili di Porto Viro are also part of the Veneto Regional Park of the Po Delta. They are classified as Sites of Community Importance (SCI) and are considered oases of biodiversity because of their special vegetation. The Dune fossili di Donada also reveal the ancient Adriatic coast that existed in Etruscan times. The preserved fossil dunes are the last remnants of a coastal barrier system that formed between the pre-Roman Etruscan period and the early Middle Ages. The Spiaggia di Scanno Cavallari, with a length of 4.5 km, offers a different landscape impression.

Wetlands and Birdwatching

The Golena di Ca' Pisani covers approximately 43 hectares. It includes the embankment section on the left bank of the Po di Maistra, wetlands, around 4 hectares of woodland, as well as areas that were formerly used for agriculture and now lie fallow. Several paths, birdwatching observation points, a small visitor centre and reconstructed traditional fishing structures make the Golena a diverse destination. The area is an important bird habitat. Among others, visitors can observe little egrets, grey herons, great egrets, purple herons, squacco herons, black-winged stilts, bee-eaters, marsh harriers and hoopoes. La Via delle Valli Sud is particularly suitable for birdwatching and nature photography, offering another perspective on nature. Seasonal waterbirds can be observed along the lagoons and valley waters, including flamingos, which are also frequently seen. La Via delle Valli Sud is also an easy cycling route. It takes 1 hour and 30 minutes and begins at the car park at Via delle Valli 1 in Porto Levante (Porto Viro). The precise route information helps classify this excursion as an independent cycling tour, while the waters along the route provide additional opportunities for observing nature. During the summer season, a short boat trip also goes as far as Scanno Cavallari.

Orientation and Access to Special Places

The Centro Visitatori del Parco di Porto Viro is located at the entrance to Porto Viro, at the exit from the S.S. Romea. Inside, there is a large diorama of the Po Delta. This makes the centre an informative introduction to the landscape before you explore individual areas of the delta. The open-air museum can be accessed from two sides of the park; both paths lead to the Ghiacciaia. This specific access situation distinguishes a visit to the museum from the nature trails of the Golena and the observation points along the waterscapes.

History, Rural Everyday Life and Regional Products

The Taglio di Porto Viro was a major hydraulic engineering project of the Republic of Venice in the early 17th century. Its construction redirected a greater volume of water to the south. It complements the natural experiences with an example of how the area's waterscape was historically altered. The Museo della Corte di Ca' Cappello uses the rooms of a 17th-century complex. Its ethnographic section reconstructs the rural world of the Polesine: a rural tavern from the 1950s, a kitchen, a bedroom and an attic with children's games and everyday objects show different aspects of life at that time. The beekeeping centre of Ca' Cappellino also combines insight with a regional product. It has a honey extraction room and a sales outlet for honey produced in the park and marketed under the brand Miele del Parco del Delta del Po. The following destination pages are also available for further orientation: Giacciano Con Baruchella, Occhiobello, Crespino, Corbola, Costa di Rovigo, Rovigo and Piano.
