Occhiobello combines riverside landscapes, local history and regional traditions. Two perspectives are particularly interesting when planning your trip: finding your way along the Po, and exploring the cultural sites and events in Occhiobello and Santa Maria Maddalena.

Po landscape and Route GT 4

Parco della Rotta is a large green floodplain area directly on the River Po. You can reach the park via the riverside road.

Route GT 4 also follows the Po. It runs along the Venetian bank through a broad floodplain. Its further course is particularly useful for finding your way around the municipality: after crossing the railway, road and motorway bridges over the Po, the route enters the municipality of Occhiobello, passes through Santa Maria Maddalena and then continues into the town centre of Occhiobello.

Architectural history and historical references

The local history includes the present-day Chiesa di Santa Maria Maddalena and its bell tower. Both were rebuilt between 1952 and 1955 based on designs by the architect Giovanni Battista Scarpari and the engineer Oscar Marin from Adria.

Villa Savonarola generally corresponds to the rural settlement forms of Alto Medio Polesine. The complex consists partly of interconnected elements and partly of separate ones. Another historical reference dates back to 28 July 1563: on that day, Duke Alfonso II granted Michele IV Savonarola, the son of Giovanni Battista, and his brothers Girolamo and Nicolò a fief in Villa Occhiobello. The Savonarola family's ownership continued even after the Este duchy was transferred to the Papal States, lasting until 1696, and then passed to the R.R.M.M. of S. Caterina da Siena in Ferrara.

Events in Occhiobello and Santa Maria Maddalena

The events calendar reflects different sides of the town. At the Sagra di San Lorenzo, the Ente Palio San Lorenzo Occhiobello ensemble performed with musicians and flag throwers. The festival, held from 8 to 14 August, also featured music, performances and dancing. Food stalls offered first and second courses, filled sandwiches, piadine, hamburgers, side dishes and desserts.

The Fiera di Santa Maria Maddalena, held from 11 to 22 July, offered performances, music and entertainment in Piazza Maggiore. A distinct sporting highlight took place on Saturday, 4 July, with the 48th edition of “In sla rota ad Po – Summer Edition”: it brought cycling enthusiasts to Piazza Maggiore in Santa Maria Maddalena. On 3 August, a performance was also held in the park of Villa Pepoli in Santa Maria Maddalena as part of the “Tra ville e giardini” series.

Regional cuisine and commemorative traditions

Local specialities of Occhiobello include cappelletti, cappellacci with pumpkin, garlic salami and salama da sugo. The traditional bread of Occhiobello and Santa Maria Maddalena is called “la ciupeta”.

The memory of the history of Polesine is also kept alive in the town. 14 November 1951, the anniversary of the flood in Polesine, is a day of remembrance in Occhiobello for the victims swept away by the floodwaters.
