Taglio di Po
Accommodation in Taglio Di Po
Taglio di Po between hydraulic engineering and river landscapes
Taglio di Po is best understood through its combination of river history, regional culture and routes along the great river. The name itself refers to a major undertaking by the Republic of Venice: Between 1600 and 1604, the Po was diverted as part of a major hydraulic engineering project. The aim was to protect the Venetian Lagoon from silting up. This history gives the town a clear historical connection to the waterways of Veneto.
History in the town and near the Po embankment
Among Taglio di Po's early buildings is the town's parish church, which has a bell tower. Another historical landmark is Villa Zeno, also known as Ca' Zen. It is located near the Po embankment and was built around the middle of the 18th century. The area around the town therefore brings together different historical layers: the large-scale diversion of the river, the town's ecclesiastical architectural history and a building from the era of Venetian country villas.
Ca' Vendramin is particularly striking. Construction of the pumping station began in 1900, was completed in 1903 and the facility was officially accepted in 1905. Today, the pumping station in the Po Delta is considered a particularly significant example of industrial archaeology. From Taglio di Po, Ca' Vendramin can be reached along the park route. This makes it possible to combine a stay with a specific historical destination without limiting the town's history to individual buildings.
River, routes and regional experiences
The great river also provides a practical point of reference for exploring the area. From Taglio di Po, it can be discovered on foot, by bicycle or in small boats. These three options place different emphases, but remain closely connected to the landscape and its hydraulic engineering history. Those who want to explore the surroundings independently therefore have several ways to experience the river as part of the destination.
Regional produce is also part of the character of this landscape. Riso del Delta del Po IGP is grown in the areas of Veneto and Emilia-Romagna shaped by deposits from the Po. Its complete production cycle, from sowing to packaging, takes place within the Po Delta. The rice thus represents an agricultural speciality whose production is clearly linked geographically to the delta.
Events with a local character
On 16 September, Taglio di Po commemorates the Taglio di Porto Viro. This includes the Palio d’la Cariola, a wheelbarrow race in historical costumes. Another dated occasion is Madonna del Vaiolo, which is celebrated in Taglio di Po every year on 27 January with a solemn procession at the Chiesa di San Francesco d’Assisi. The two occasions have distinct emphases: one commemorates a hydraulic engineering event, while the other is rooted in a religious procession.
