Oriago Di Mira: Villas, the Brenta and Venetian History
Accommodation in Oriago Di Mira
Oriago di Mira combines the history of the Riviera del Brenta with Venetian villas, sacred art and a landscape whose development is closely linked to water and trade. This gives you several points of access when planning your trip: you can place the historic buildings of Oriago in context, understand the Brenta’s former significance and include a day boat trip to Stra to explore the Venetian villas of the Riviera del Brenta.
River Landscape and Local History
Historically, the area around Oriago was characterised by marshland connected to the nearby Venetian Lagoon. This landscape provides an important backdrop to the development of the town. Thanks to its strategic location on the Brenta River, Oriago developed into an important agricultural and trading centre. The river is therefore not only part of the local geography but is also connected to Oriago’s historical function.
Venetian Villas in Oriago
Several documented buildings give the town’s villa history a concrete form. Villa Allegri is an 18th-century Venetian villa located on the left bank of the Brenta in Oriago. Villa Mocenigo is located on the right bank of the Naviglio in Oriago di Mira and is also one of the town’s Venetian villas.
The history of Villa Stella, Gradenigo, Fossati reaches back particularly far. It was built in 1529 by the Scarpa family from Bergamo and is considered one of the oldest villas on the Riviera del Brenta. The year and the attribution to the Scarpa family show that villa culture in Oriago is not limited to the 18th century but also has older origins.
Church, Bell Tower and Art
Another historical point of reference is the Chiesa di Santa Maria Maddalena. The building dates from the 14th century. The bell tower has a square ground plan and is crowned by a conical spire on an octagonal base. Terracotta mouldings decorate this spire and give the tower a clearly defined architectural detail.
The church’s art history is also connected to a specific date: in 1543, an altarpiece was commissioned from Jacopo da Bassano (1510–1592). It depicts the encounter between Mary Magdalene and Jesus. Together with the medieval church building and bell tower, this reveals a historical arc within a single town.
Event and Day Trip
If you would like to discover Oriago during a seasonal event, Oriago in Fiore takes place every year in April. The flower, plant and floristry market is held between Piazza Mercato and the Riviera San Pietro in Oriago di Mira. The market complements the permanently documented architectural and historical heritage with an annual recurring event.
To explore the villa landscape by water, a day boat trip from Oriago di Mira travels to Stra. The aim of this trip is to explore the Venetian villas of the Riviera del Brenta. This means that Oriago can be understood both through its own historical connections and through the wider villa landscape along this cultural region.
