Villaga combines historical landmarks with a varied landscape of farmland, vineyards and forests.

Historic sites between Eremo and Villaga

One prominent historical landmark is Eremo di San Donato. It is located at an altitude of 300 metres on a rock face with large natural cavities near a spring and has been documented since 1243. In 1283, a Benedictine nunnery was added to the Eremo. The route there offers views of the valley below and the Euganean Hills. Those interested in the connection between landscape and history will find a particularly illustrative focus for planning their trip here.

The hills between San Donato and Monte Tondo also preserve traces of the First World War. There are fortifications, trenches carved into the rock, short tunnel sections, machine-gun positions and a stone blockhouse. The Grotte di San Donato lie almost at the summit of the 415-metre-high Monte Tondo. These different historical and landscape landmarks can be used as thematic points of reference when choosing accommodation, without implying any particular distance or accessibility.

Villaga's architectural history also includes several independent examples. The present-day building of San Giorgio in Toara dates from the early 18th century. The church probably originated as a chapel within the parish or ecclesiastical district of Barbarano and later developed into a parish church. The oldest document in which San Giorgio in Toara is mentioned is dated 10 October 1288. The parish of San Michele Arcangelo is first mentioned in a known reference from 1187; its dedication to the Archangel Michael is considered a possible indication of Lombard origins.

Villa Rasia-Dani is considered the oldest house in the municipality of Villaga. The walls of the right-hand part of the building date from the early 15th century, while the wooden portico and loggia were built between 1506 and 1509. Villa Palma-Bedeschi, also known as “La Commenda di San Silvestro”, passed from the Templars to the Knights Hospitaller and later to the Knights of Malta. Villa Barbarano is also known as “Il Castello di Belvedere”. At Colombara del Paradiso, usually called “Castellaro”, the structure dates back to medieval defensive towers; it is said to have been used as an observation post.

Landscape, trails and specific travel decisions

The landscape of Villaga ranges from open farmland and vineyards to forests covering Monte Tondo. The Calto Valley preserves the atmosphere of an unspoilt place with mills that were closely connected with the use of water for centuries. This provides different landscape impressions for your planning: open areas, wooded slopes and a valley whose character has been shaped by its historical use.

For travellers who want to explore Villaga via trails, the Alta Via dei Berici runs through the western part of the Pozzolo plateau. In Villaga, stage 22 also runs from San Donato di Villaga to Valle Verde di Pozzolo. The E7 Riviera Berica regional cycle route follows the former route of the FTV railway and tram line. This information helps you determine your preferred focus before booking accommodation: a trip centred on ridges and trails differs from a stay focused on historic buildings or wine.

Please note an important restriction when planning routes in the Calto Valley: the complete loop trail of the Tourist Path of Calto Valley is currently unavailable. From the Bampo Fountain, the path cannot continue through the forest on the eastern slope to Via Gervasi. Therefore, do not plan this route as a continuous loop.

Wine and accommodation in Toara di Villaga

The local character also includes the Piovene Porto Godi winery in Toara di Villaga. It offers individuals and groups tours and tastings, including individually designed tastings of different vintages or tastings with local products. If wine and regional produce are important to you, this offering can be a separate focus of your trip planning. For specific scheduling, check the applicable conditions directly with the winery.

When looking for accommodation in Villaga, it makes sense to sort out these interests first: historic sites, landscape trails, the Calto Valley or wine in Toara di Villaga lead to different ideas about the stay. This keeps the choice of accommodation aligned with your personal travel plan, without assuming specific amenities or distances.
