Conco: History, Hiking and Events
Conco can be explored through a range of travel interests: cultural history, hiking trails and seasonal events each offer a different focus. If you are looking for a hotel, start by asking what you want your stay to be centered on: historic sites, natural features along hiking trails or the timing of an event.
History in Conco
The Cimitero Italo-francese di Conco is a specific point of reference for the history of the First World War. It was established after the defeat at Caporetto. The first Italian burial took place in May 1917; French burials began in 1918. A total of 2,784 fallen soldiers were buried there, and the identities of 25 percent of those buried were unknown. The chronology sets out when Italian and French burials began; the number and proportion of unidentified people also give a sense of the cemetery’s scale. Together, the timeline and information about those buried there provide two different perspectives on the site.
Another historical point of reference is the parish church of Conco. It is dedicated to S. Marco and the Madonna della Neve, was built between 1536 and 1539, and was extended in 1713. This brings together a 16th-century building and a later addition from the early 18th century. Unlike the cemetery, the focus here is on the building’s history and its two dedications. For those who want to understand Conco through more than the events of the First World War, the church offers a second historical point of reference.
Hiking Trails and Activities
The historic, large-growth beech trees known as “Fagaroni” stand along a hiking trail starting from Conco. The natural spring “Poseto del Prundole” is also located along a hiking trail starting from Conco. The hiking experience therefore includes two specific natural features: old beech trees and a spring. If hiking is your main focus, these features can help you narrow down your interests and find a theme for your trails.
Malga Biancoia, in the municipality of Lusiana Conco, is easy to reach by car and has a large car park. For travelers planning their day around driving, this location provides a specific point of reference. There is also a paragliding launch site at Contrà Bielli in the municipality of Lusiana Conco. If you are interested in paragliding, you can include this launch site in your plans as a specific activity.
Events and When to Visit
The traditional Fiaccolata delle Contrade di Conco takes place every year on January 1. The food event series “A tavola con il Tarassaco di Conco De.Co.” returns in spring and takes place in March, April and May. The dates differ: a fixed day in January is followed by a series spanning three spring months. In July and August, the Infopoint at Casa Sivocci on Piazza San Marco in Conco provides tourist information and event bookings. This means there are three different points of reference for planning when to visit: a January date, a springtime period and seasonal summer information.
