Churches and Local History

The local history of Cornedo Vicentino encompasses several historical layers. The Chiesa di S. Andrea in the hamlet of Cereda was the first religious building to be elevated to parish church status, in the 13th century. The parish church of San Rocco represents a different chapter: it was built after the plague as an expression of gratitude that the population had been spared the danger. The histories of the two churches therefore reflect different perspectives: the development into a parish church in Cereda and a building whose construction was explicitly associated with gratitude.

The Chiesa di S. Sebastiano combines an uncertain historical attribution with a specific setting in the landscape. It was probably built in 1469 at the site where the former castle of Cornedo is thought to have stood. The church stands on the hill of the same name above Cornedo; its large forecourt offers a view across the valley. The building’s history and location emphasize different aspects: its connection to the former castle remains a conjecture, while the hilltop setting and valley view define the site.

Art, Archaeology and Historical Context

The Chiesa di S. Sebastiano houses a partially gilded wooden sculpture of the enthroned Madonna and Child, dating from 1514. The building and the artwork can therefore be associated with two different historical dates: the church was probably built in 1469, while the sculpture dates from 1514. This distinction helps separate the construction of a sacred building from the dating of a work of art.

The Chiesa Parrocchiale di San Giovanni Battista was consecrated on September 11, 1966. The church houses a depiction of the Birth of John the Baptist by Alessandro Maganza. The exact date of the consecration and the named painting provide two different points of reference for understanding this site; the depiction also relates to the church’s patron saint.

L'UOMO DELLA ROCCIA offers a much longer historical perspective. Excavations nearby between 2013 and 2019 showed that the natural amphitheater, in which the large stone pillar is set, had been inhabited since the Neolithic period. The archaeological perspective thus reaches far back before the history of the churches. To understand Cornedo Vicentino’s cultural heritage, visitors can distinguish between the sacred architecture and art history and the long history of settlement.

Wine, Gravel Route and Travel Planning

The connection with wine is also geographically specific: the Strada del vino Lessini Durello is associated with a part of the municipality of Cornedo Vicentino that belongs to the DOC Lessini Durello. This part of the municipality is therefore key to understanding the area’s regional identity.

The Salita alla Croce del Sojo gravel-bike route offers a different perspective. It follows secondary roads to Cornedo Vicentino; the route and surface conditions may change. Cultural history and cycling are two different focal points for travel planning: churches, works of art and archaeological history on the one hand, and a gravel route with changing conditions on the other.

When looking for accommodation, you can start with your own interests: are churches and art, the prehistoric perspective, or wine and gravel biking your main focus? This lets you explore Cornedo Vicentino according to the interests that matter to you, rather than planning your stay around a single historic site.
