Enego: Culture, Trails and Landscape
Accommodation in Enego
History in the Heart of Enego
For your trip to Enego, local history, landscape and selected trails come together to offer a range of experiences. An important landmark is the Torre Scaligera on Piazza San Marco in the centre of Enego. It was built around 1330 on the orders of Cangrande della Scala and formed part of a larger, square-shaped fortification. Standing approximately 22 metres high, it shapes the town’s historic appearance. The Torre Scaligera also houses a permanent historical exhibition with archaeological, geological and medieval artefacts.
The Cathedral of Santa Giustina also makes a distinctive cultural contribution. The church was built in 1792 at the top of a tall staircase; inside, it contains an altarpiece by Jacopo Da Ponte. Enego is also associated with Egidio Fontana, a palaeontologist and palaeoethnologist from the town. Those wishing to place the area’s historic character in context will find two further, distinct points of reference in Forte Lisser and Forte Coldarco. Forte Lisser belonged to the Fortezze Brenta–Cismon fortification system, whose purposes included controlling the Valsugana. Forte Coldarco is a restored First World War fortification in Enego. Thus, the historical arc extends from medieval fortifications through regional defence systems to a restored First World War installation.
Marcesina, Trails and Nature
The Piana di Marcesina lies at an altitude of approximately 1,300 metres and features extensive meadows and large forests. At higher elevations, rhododendrons, mountain pines and edelweiss grow. The natural area also includes Palù di San Lorenzo, a protected wetland with distinctive botanical and faunal characteristics. The Piana di Marcesina is used by hikers and sports enthusiasts in both summer and winter. Here, open grazing areas, woodland and higher-altitude plant habitats stand alongside a protected wetland as clearly distinct landscape elements.
For a longer route, the Connessione delle memorie is an option. The 7.5-kilometre educational trail includes six points of interest and connects Marcesina and Valmaron via an old military road. Valmaron also has a small ski area for alpine skiing. The Sentiero Panorama, by contrast, is an easy walking trail from Stoner to Monte Spitz. It is marked with signposts; some of these signposts have QR codes that provide access to an audio guide. The Municipality of Enego also provides a Joelette, an all-terrain wheelchair.
