Gallio Between Mountain Trails, Culture and Sport

If you are considering Gallio as a travel destination, historic paths, nature experiences and alpine sports facilities come together here. Gallio’s mountain trails include mule tracks built by soldiers during the First World War. They can be explored on foot, by mountain bike or on horseback. Near the town centre is also the Percorso ciclo-pedonale della Pace, while the Valle dei Mulini offers walks along a network of paths through places of historic and scenic interest.

For a route with interpretive stations, the Percorso didattico della Val di Nos is ideal: it leads through woodland paths and combines information panels with picnic areas. Near the Santuario della Madonna del Buso lies a narrow canyon carved into the rock by the Frenzela stream. The Melette di Gallio are also among the area’s distinctive landscape features. Monumental, centuries-old beech trees known as “le Puche” stand there; the Cimbrian name means “beech”. In the Stoccareddo area of the Val Frenzela, there is also the Spitzknotto, also called Spizegonotto, a huge altar-shaped boulder.

Places of Remembrance and Regional History

Several destinations combine physical activity with history. The Sentiero del Silenzio runs through the forest near Campomuletto and recalls the events of the First World War that shaped the Altopiano di Asiago between 1915 and 1918. The mills in the Valle dei Mulini processed grain from the Altopiano and powered Pestascorze machines, which produced tanning agents for leather tanning.

Along the path to Monte Longara in Gallio stands the Libr'Albero. This work of art and reading refuge was created from the trunk of a centuries-old spruce that was blown down during Storm Vaia in autumn 2018. The Libr'Albero contains carvings of local fauna as well as a small display case with books by Mario Rigoni Stern and other mountain stories. The Santuario della Madonna del Buso is dedicated to the Madonna del Caravaggio. The rebuilt sanctuary was inaugurated and blessed on 27 May 1927; it was a pilgrimage destination particularly on 26 May and 26 July.

Sports Destinations and Guided Experiences

The sporting facilities are spread across different areas. The Centro Fondo Campomulo has more than 150 km of cross-country ski trails. The Melette 2000 alpine ski slopes are located in the municipality of Gallio, about 4.5 km from the town centre. Near Pakstall, the Valle dei Trampolini is about 1 km from the town centre. It features ski jumping hills, including the K95; international competitions have been held here.

There is also a clearly defined e-bike offering beyond the winter sports facilities. Le Melette offers four guided e-bike experiences starting at the E-Bike Welcome Desk at Località Melette 1 in Gallio. The programme is led by certified AMI guides and runs across pastures, historic mule tracks and nature trails. The Gourmet Tour combines e-bike riding with breakfast in a mountain hut and lunch at an alpine pasture or in a traditional hut. The menu features local products from short supply chains. The mountain refuges and alpine huts of Campomulo serve traditional mountain cuisine.
