Mossano combines historic buildings, a remarkable landscape of mills and paths through the surrounding area. This gives you different ways to plan your visit: you can admire historic residences and architecture carved into the rock, discover the Valle dei Mulini or choose a guided circular hike with stops highlighting the area’s history, nature and archaeology.

Historic Sites Between Villas and Rock Architecture

Villa Pigafetta Camerini, an aristocratic residence from the 18th century, stands on the hill of Montruglio in Mossano. It is one of the town’s clearly identifiable historic points of interest and complements the impressions offered by Mossano’s centre and older areas. After passing through the centre of Mossano, Villa Giulia can be seen on the right. The building probably dates from the 16th century. The different dates attributed to the two villas show that Mossano brings together historic evidence from several periods, without assigning both buildings to the same era.

“Le Prigioni” are a distinctive historic feature in their own right. They consist of an ancient palace carved almost entirely into the rock. “Le Prigioni” were probably used as guard posts for the possessions of the Bishop of Vicenza. The complex dates from between 900 and 1100 AD and consists of three floors. The underground floor is connected to the exterior door. These architectural features give the site a character different from that of the imposing villas: here, the focus is not on an aristocratic residence but on the connection between rock, building structure and medieval use.

Mills, Forest and the Sentiero di San Bernardino

The Valle dei Mulini in the Mossano district comprises 12 mills, some of which are still in operation. The number of mills and the fact that some continue to operate make the valley a distinct focal point within the area. It complements the historic buildings with a landscape in which the use of water and the mills themselves can be considered together.

Mossano also offers different options for hiking. A walk of approximately 20 minutes through the forest leads to the Grotta maggiore di San Bernardino. The stated duration should be understood as an approximate time. There is also a guided circular hike along the Sentiero di San Bernardino, with a variant that explores the history, nature and archaeology of the area. Those who do not want to consider these subjects separately will find a documented connection between the path, landscape and local history there. The guided option differs from an independent walk through the forest.

Mossano Within the Wider Region

In the regional context, the municipality of Barbarano Mossano is a starting point for the Alta Via dei Berici. The route is 130 kilometres long and is intended for trekking, mountain biking and horse riding. This means that the potential travel connection extends beyond Mossano’s historic sites. Barbarano Mossano is also known for producing extra virgin olive oil. This regional aspect complements the cultural and historic attractions with a specific feature of local production.

If you would like to compare other places in addition to Mossano, you can also view Sarcedo Sarcedo, Arcugnano Arcugnano, Cornedo Vicentino Cornedo Vicentino, Velo D'astico Velo D'astico, Altissimo Altissimo, Foza Foza, Pedemonte Pedemonte and Brogliano Brogliano.
