Valstagna – Karst, Historic Trails and Museums
Accommodation in Valstagna
Valstagna can be explored through several clearly distinguishable themes: karst landscape, river history, historic trails and museums. This creates a destination whose special features are revealed both in the landscape and in the traditional ways of life and transportation that have been passed down over time.
Karst Landscape and Watercourses
Near Valstagna, the Grotte di Oliero are a classic karst phenomenon. The springs of the Oliero River rise from them. The path through the Grotte di Oliero park provides an immediate impression of the landscape: it passes beneath high rock walls where a diverse rock flora can be seen. At Contrada Torre, the rock steps of the Calieroni waterfalls are also located, between which the Frenzela plunges downward.
Museums Between Everyday Life and Geology
The Museo etnografico Canal di Brenta documents the life and history of the Brenta Valley through historical photographs, farming implements and historical information. One particular focus is the former transport of timber: the museum shows how wood was transported via the medieval staircase of Calà del Sasso and then on rafts along the river.
At the entrance to the Grotte di Oliero system lies the Museo di Speleologia e Carsismo “A. Parolini”. It explores the geology of the karst process through minerals, fossils and the chemistry underlying this process. This places two different approaches side by side: the ethnographic collection focuses on life and the use of the landscape, while the speleology museum explains the geological foundations.
Historic Trails and Specific Routes
For orientation purposes, the Calà del Sasso provides a clearly described connection between two trailheads. The upper trailhead is next to the hamlet of Sasso di Asiago, while the lower one is not far from the church in Valstagna. The medieval staircase is therefore both a historic transport route and a prominent part of the traditional history of timber transport.
The Alta Via del Tabacco is a named trail in the Canale del Brenta–Valstagna area. It connects the trails along the orographically right-hand side of the Valbrenta. One specific section leads from Costa to Valstagna, is approximately 10 kilometres long, has an elevation gain of 600 metres and takes about 3.5 hours on foot. If you would like to assess a longer route, this section therefore provides specific information on length, elevation difference and walking time.
The Alta Via del Tabacco is also presented as the “Museo Diffuso Alta Via del Tabacco”. In this form, it connects the settlements on the slopes with the historic terraces. The trail is therefore described not only as a connection between individual sections, but also as a spatial representation of the history of settlement and terracing.
Underground World and River Event
A boat trip lasting approximately 30 minutes explores the underground world of Grotta Parolini near Oliero. This experience is complemented by the Palio delle Zattere, a historical-cultural and sporting event: the rafts of Valstagna’s nine Contrade compete against one another on a three-kilometre course along the Brenta River.
Getting Oriented on the Way to the Alta Via
From Bassano del Grappa, take the Valsugana state road north towards Trento. At Valstagna, cross the bridge over the Brenta and turn north towards Costa to reach the Alta Via del Tabacco.
