Vicenza: Palladio’s cityscape as a UNESCO World Heritage Site
Vicenza combines a cohesive historic cityscape with important buildings, museums and landscapes. The City of Vicenza and the Palladian Villas of the Veneto form a serial UNESCO World Heritage Site: it includes Vicenza and 24 Palladian villas scattered throughout the Veneto. Particularly characteristic are the Palladian palaces, which were integrated into the medieval urban fabric. This created picturesque ensembles and continuous street façades in which Venetian Gothic combines with Palladio’s structured classicism. Numerous original buildings by Palladio make Vicenza a uniquely preserved example of a comprehensive humanist concept based on a living interpretation of antiquity.
Basilica Palladiana, theatre and important collections
The Basilica Palladiana is known for its Serlian loggia designed by Andrea Palladio. It encloses the medieval Palazzo della Ragione; since 1994, the Basilica has been part of Vicenza’s UNESCO World Heritage Site. From the terrace on the second floor of this monumental Renaissance building, visitors can enjoy a 360-degree view over the entire old town, the medieval rooftops, the Piazza dei Signori below and the natural profile of the Colli Berici. The site of the Basilica was once occupied by the “Palatium vetus”, the first seat of Vicenza’s city administration and magistrates.
The Basilica is also home to the Museo del Gioiello. The permanent museum covers 410 square metres and was the first museum in Italy devoted exclusively to jewellery; worldwide, it is one of only a few museums of its kind. The “GIOIELLO – ITALIA” exhibition 2025–2027 is spread across six rooms and eleven themed areas. It traces the development of jewellery from the 5th century BC to the 21st century.
The Teatro Olimpico was Andrea Palladio’s final work and is considered the oldest covered theatre in the world. The Accademia Olimpica commissioned it in February 1580. It was completed five years later and ceremonially inaugurated on 3 March 1585 with a performance of Sophocles’ “Oedipus Rex”. A notice from the City of Vicenza dated 10 August 2026 lists opening hours for the Teatro Olimpico from 10:00 to 18:00, Tuesday to Sunday.
Another key attraction is the Palazzo Chiericati, which Andrea Palladio designed for Girolamo Chiericati in 1550. Since 1855, it has been the historic home of Vicenza’s Museo Civico. The museum preserves and displays more than 35,000 works of painting, sculpture, graphic art and applied art dating from the 13th to the 20th century. The Palladio Museum is a ten-minute walk from Vicenza railway station, providing a clearly identifiable reference point for travelling to one of the city’s central cultural attractions.
Monte Berico, villas and sacred art
The Sanctuary of Santa Maria di Monte Berico lies on the hill south of the city. It was established following two apparitions of the Virgin Mary on 7 March 1426 and 1 August 1428 and was a pilgrimage destination from the outset. In 1578, Andrea Palladio extended the sanctuary with a large square nave. The Museo d’arte sacra di Monte Berico preserves thousands of testimonies to popular devotion from Vicenza as well as the Veneto and Lombardy. The collections range from the 14th century to the present day and are divided into six thematic areas, including the history of the sanctuary, liturgical furnishings, votive offerings, the iconography of the Servite Order and post-Byzantine icons. For the connection between the historic centre and Monte Berico, Vicenza’s tourism portal offers a recommended GPX hiking route.
The Chiesa di Santa Corona also adds to the city’s cultural profile. Its Gothic interior contains Giovanni Bellini’s “Baptism of Christ” and Paolo Veronese’s “Adoration of the Magi”. At Villa Valmarana ai Nani, the Palazzina and the Foresteria are decorated with frescoes by the Tiepolo artists. On Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, visitors can walk through the Bosco from the car park on Via della Rotonda and continue their visit in the Foresteria and the Palazzina.
Green spaces and nature within the city
Vicenza also has a variety of landscapes within its municipal area. Parco Querini is bordered by the banks of the Bacchiglione, the Astichello tributary and a section of the Venetian city walls along Viale Rodolfi. Its design includes a pond with an island crowned by a small temple, a grove and a fitness trail. At Parco della Pace, visitors can observe herons, egrets, deer, frogs and fish, among other wildlife. Five entrances for pedestrians and cyclists are easily accessible via the city’s cycle network.
The Villa Almerico Capra Valmarana, known as “La Rotonda”, has a central plan on a square base, four identical façades with six-columned pronaoi and grand staircases, as well as a central dome. Areas of particular cultural interest include the garden around the villa, the grand staircases and the façades’ pronaoi. The Vicenza Gold Card is valid for twelve days from the date of issue and permits one visit per participating site.
