Belluno is situated in the north of the Veneto region right at the bottom of the Dolomites, right below the Schiara mountain range. The Schiara mountain range is the end point of the famous Dolomites high altitude trail No 1. Besides, Belluno is an Italian final point for many hikers. Belluno Dolomites National Park, created in 1993, shows how the Dolomites create Belluno. Besides, in 1999 it was awarded the Alpine town of the year. More over, Belluno is situated in the vinicity of Sonthofen, Bad Reichenhall, Chambéry and Trento.
But for all other visitors Belluno has its charm. The medium-sized city on the river Piave with 36,000 inhabitants combines the charm of the mountains with an Italian flair, abruptness of the mountains with warm earth tones of the houses, climbing with cappuccino.
Belluno offers exquisite cuisine in addition to excellent snacks. Thus, from November to February in eight of the most renowned restaurants of the Alto Gusto region one can taste the best dishes served with the excellent wine. E.g. Al Borgo in Belluno, Al Capriolo in Vodo di Cadore, All Codole in Cabale d’Agordo, Baite Fraina and Tivoli in Cotrina d’Amprezzo, Dolada di Plois in Pieve D’Alpago, Laite in Sappada, San Lorenzo in Puos d’Alpago.
A great painter Titian and John Paul I were born in Belluno. The main attractions are the Belluno Cathedral and Cathedral Square, the town hall with its Campanaria Torre that is 67 m high, the Palace of Justice and many other noble houses from the Renaissance. They all grouped around the old market square Piazza delle Erbe and spread over Via Mezzaterra with Palazzo Agosti and Palazzo Varola.
Belluno is a perfect city for everyone no matter whether you are a nature lover or a cultural friend, a city tourist or a hiker. The Celts were right when they called this city “belo dunum”, that is a beautiful city.
