Bassano Del Grappa lies on the banks of the Brenta and at the foot of Monte Grappa. If you are planning your stay around specific interests, you can choose between art collections, a historic bridge, military history and a wall walk with a viewpoint. These highlights give your choice a clear direction: art history, the history of the World Wars and the town’s architectural past each take centre stage in their own way. To choose where to stay, you can first weigh up whether art collections, World War history or the wall walk are your main interests.

Ponte Vecchio and Historic Buildings

Ponte Vecchio, also known as Ponte degli Alpini, has been a national monument since June 2019. Both names refer to the same bridge, so you do not need to treat them as two different attractions. The Poli Grappa Museum is housed in a 15th-century palace opposite the historic wooden Ponte Vecchio. This places two buildings in a clear spatial relationship: the bridge and the palace with the museum opposite it. If you are organising your stay around history and architecture, this setting offers a specific thematic focus.

Art at the Museo Civico

The Museo Civico di Bassano del Grappa is housed in the former San Francesco monastery complex. Its collections span from prehistory and the Renaissance to contemporary masters. The museum also houses the largest collection of works by Jacopo Da Ponte and his workshop. Two aspects may therefore interest you in making your choice: the broad chronological range and the distinctive collection of works by one artist and his workshop. If you are interested in art history across several periods, this museum combines a wide-ranging collection with a clearly defined focus.

Two Distinct Museum Themes

The Museo ANA Montegrappa has a narrower historical focus. It presents life in the trenches during the First and Second World Wars. Its war exhibits and historical artefacts include helmets, aerial bombs, shrapnel and bayonets. These objects make the subject more tangible alongside its coverage of two wars. The contrast with the Museo Civico is clear: there, the collections span from prehistory to contemporary masters; here, the focus is on life in the trenches and related war artefacts. When choosing between the museums, you are choosing between artworks from different periods and a concentrated look at life during the World Wars.

The Wall Walk and Seasonal Access

The Camminamento del Castello degli Ezzelini runs along walls that have protected the church of Santa Maria in Colle and the people of Bassano since at least 1150. The route ends at a viewpoint overlooking the Brenta River and Ponte di Palladio. The walk can therefore be understood through two clear points: along the walls, their protective function takes centre stage; at the endpoint, the view of the river and bridge. In 2026, the Camminamento is open to the public from 25 April until the end of October; seasonal access may change. Bear this time frame in mind if you are including the walk in your plans.
