Veneto Region, located in the northeastern Italy, is one of the leading manufacturers of wine products. Veneto holds the first place in the manufacturing of high-class wines and the third in the total wine production of the country.
The mild Mediterranean climate and great variety of Veneto landscapes create ideal conditions for growing different sorts of wine (there are about 90 sorts).
All areas used for the growing of grapes can be divided into several main parts: the eastern Veneto is a plain located in the basins of the Tagliamento and the Pieve rivers, in the central part - the hills around Treviso, Vicenza and Padua, and valleys in near Verona, which stretch between the town of Soave and the Lake Garda in the west. The most significant and best-known wine-growing areas include Soave, Valpolicella, Bardolino and Prosecco.
The DOC Soave zone is situated between Verona and Vicenza and is famous for producing exquisite white wines. For its manufacturing are used such sorts of grape as Garganega (its share in the amount of wines is about 70%), Chardonnay, Pinot Bianco and Trebbiano di Soave. The wines are straw-colored and have a velvety scent with notes of almonds. The central part of the Soave valley holds the Classico zone, on the territory of which the vineyards are located only on the hills. The wines made in this area are called Soave Classico. A sweet wine of Recioto di Soave is famous for its delicate floral bouquet. Also a high place in the hierarchy of wines holds the dry Soave Superiore.
In Valpolicella DOC areas are produced red wines. For their manufacturing are used such grapes as Corvina, Rondinella, Molinara and Barbera. In small quantities are included Dindarella, Negrar, Kroatina, Sangiovese and Rossignol. The simplest wine is Valpolicella. The most valuable wines are Valpolicella Classico, Valpolicella Classico Superiore, sweet Recioto della Valpolicella and dry wines Amarone della Valpolicella.
Not far from the valley is located the town of Bardolino that is known for its young red and pink wines such as Bardolino, Barodolino Classico and Bardolino Chiaretto.
Prosecco is an aromatic white grape grown on the hills in the province of Treviso near the cities of Valdobbiadene and Conegliano. The wine-making region of DOC Prosecco di Conegliano - Valdobbiadene produces sparkling and light sparkling wines, thanks to which is became known worldwide. The most common are spumante and frizzante.
